A meeting once again of old friends on a new frame:
Better photos to come after the C&V Coral Gables (Miami, Florida) ride (https://miamivlw.shorturl.com) this Sunday.

I wish I could see that frame in person. It looks absolutely spectacular, Kurt.
Looking forward to today's photos.

Interesting to hear you like those tires. jsharr has a pair on his falcon and is less than pleased with them. Ever used the Vittoira Rubino Pro?

Never tried the Rubino Pro. If it doesn't have a skinwall, I don't usually use it. I've been contemplating the Vittoria Roma 22 - know of any comments on those?
Here are the updated photos. I ended up riding the '61 in the Sunday ride today (but swapped it after the ride for a fast drafting session around the golf course), so these photos were taken after the ride.
Take care,
-Kurt

Bought 2 pair last year for all of $25. They look nice, the skin wall is a little bright for my taste but they seemed to wear well as long as you rotate them regularly. They rode better than the rock-like Bontragers I had previously. For the money they're more than good enough.

It's nearly perfect, but the overly-long valve stems ruin it for me. I've got the FD you need in almost-new condition. Let's make a deal. I need Simplex retrofrictions or a Sturmey-Archer S-5, among other things.

You mention they ride better then the "rock-like" Bontragers - would you say then, that they rode a bit softer on the road? I weigh 220 pounds, so a tire that can handle my weight and still provide decent rolling resistance is of more importance to me then ride comfort - my weight does a good job of taking care of that (!).
Rolling resistance is my main complaint with cheap-o tires, such as the skinwall Kenda 25Cs. Even at 110 PSI, the rear wheel felt as if were rolling on balloon tires (and it felt as if the rim was contacting the road surface as well). I do not feel this problem with my IRC 28Cs, which I've found to give me an excellent ride at 100 PSI - same for these Verdestine Ricorsos at 110. Nashbar's Chen Shing-made Prima II skinwalls performed reasonably for me at 100 PSI - better then the Kendas - but still seemed to "sag" on the road. I also tried an NOS pair of Cyclepro Discovery 27 X 1-1/8s (100 PSI) with very nice results paralleling the Ricorsos.
However, the best tires I've ever ridden on were a pair of NOS, 1980s, skinwall Specialized Turbo 27 X 1" tires - pumped up to 100 PSI at first, and then at the tire's maximum 120 PSI. Astounding performance at both tire pressures, and a beautiful tire to boot. I'd love to fit my entire fleet with these tires, but finding the original (not the current tire, which has no relation to the original) Specialized Turbo models NOS or lightly used in the 700C size has become a bit of a problem.
Take care,
-Kurt

Are you willing to settle for a pair of early Retrofrictions with a snapped clamp? I also have what I believe is an S5-2 - internals only. Need a bit more trade bait to get me to part with the latter though

The IRC's are a nice tire, but harder to find now. Anyone have a good source for the 27" size?

Figured as much. I can't stand blackwalls or colored tires, so that's out.
The 27X1-1/4" size (and I believe the 1-1/8" size as well), along with the 700X28Cs can be bagged on Amazon.com, from Niagra Cycle Works. A bit expensive, but worth it.

I should have answered this last nite - sorry.
I think a wooden wagon wheel would have been more supple than the Bontragers.......
I rode the Romas at 110 psi or so. I think they reccomended 100. I weighed around 200lbs.
For being a skinny tire pumped up too much they weren't at all balloonyor too hard.
They were about all I could ask of a tire.
Please realize that a term like supple really has no place in my vocabulary and I am not an expert on tires.
The only other tires I used regularly were the old Continental Super Sport and the latest 1000. The Roma's were as good in my opinion.
I got them on ebay, seller offered me an additinal set for $10 and I declined (wish I hadn't), haven't seen them again.

The best riding tire/wheel/bike combo I've been on have been the Michelin Pro 2 Race tires on my Open Pro 3x wheels on the Gazelle. They don't look too bad, but certainly not a 'vintage' looking tire. What they lack in looks they greatly make up for in performance. I wasn't one who really bought into the differences between tires till I went a hundred miles on them.

I tossed a pair on one of my bikes a couple of years ago, and they are an amazing riding tire. When the first set wore out, I bought a (cheaper) set of Rubino Pro's, and immediately noticed a negative difference in how they rolled and performed. After about 200 miles or so, I gave up on them and put them on my daughter's bike . Bought another set of Pro 2's and never looked back.
I could not care less how a tire looks if it is a stand-out performer. and the Pro 2's are such a tire. I have set of the gray walled one's on my Palo Alto, and they look good to me.

+1 on the Ricorso, best $10 tire around, I stocked up on a Nashbar sale & no rot so far. For dry weather, my favorite is the Gommitalia Calypso or Targa but haven't seen any around for a while & they do get beat up pretty fast around here. I like the Vredestein Fortezza on my Titans but don't have enough miles yet to know how they wear. Don

...As you can see, I went ahead and built it up completely with Shimano 600 (all I need is the FD and a pair of original indexed rings to complete the package), as I already had most of the components left over from the failed Peugeot PSV-10 project.
Hey Kurt,
Nice!!!. Just curious, you mention a failed PSV project---what happened?

This was the first time I dropped a C-note on tires (and that was below retail in the shops around here). I recently dropped 100 on a set of continental sprinter tubulars for my track bike so we'll see how expensive tubulars measure up to expensive clinchers, thought the testing grounds really won't make them comparable.
They're about $50 a unit here, too..... BUT...... next time you go shopping for them, try probikekit.com. ~$28(USD) each, and a $10 flat fee shipping charge to the USA. Probably the same to Canada, but you'd have to check. I've used PBK a lot, and shipping from the UK to California is typically 5-6 days. Once, I ordered from them and then placed an order at Nashbar. the PBK order arrived first, by a couple of days.

Man thats a sweet looking Guerciotti, Kurt.
Love the paint on that baby. It epitomizes the classic style of the early 90's Italian race bike. As for the Vittoria 'Rubino Pros' you folks been talking about, I have a set of the fold-ups on my Tommasini and love them. So far they've outlasted the Conti 'Gatorskins' I use to run, and no flats so far either. (oops, maybe I shouldnt've said that)

Doubt it if I'll bother with the Rubinos. The Romas are the only ones that strike my fancy. In fact, I can't think of a bike I own that I'd want to mount Rubinos on...'cept maybe that GMC Denali frame sitting off in that pile in my workshop
Take care,
