Wrecked today. Have a couple questions

Love reading this forum although i rarely have anything to contribute but need some help.

my garmin quit working so instead of a long ride on my 'modern' bike took my pinarello for a cruise. A van startled me by driving too close as I was crossing an angled railroad crossing at speed. was just going from the road to the bike path. Strange intersection but hasn't been a problem in the past but somehow my being startled was just enough for my front wheel to drop into the tracks and i ended up in the dirt at the side of the road. Not sure how i departed the bike but it felt spectacular! i landed on my left side so now have a scraped up ankle, outside calf, knee, hip, outside forearm and wrist, shoulder and above my eyebrow from where my helmet rang my bell. Now i have a headache and my hip hurts which is quite swollen and funny looking - like that geico commercial about bikes & saddlebags. Anyone bang their hip before and have it swell like that? maybe it has something to do with my blood thinner medication.

Thankfully my bike is mostly ok although haven't studied it closely. she seemed to ride ok though as i rode it 10 miles to get home. somehow i managed to rip both brake hoods and scuff up my beautiful bar tap. not sure where to get replacements or which terms to search for on ebay - especially because my brake hoods have holes at the top for cables but my cables are routed along the bars so probably the hoods aren't correct. would like to find some correct, white hoods that match the levers. Need to buy a chain too as mine is stretched beyond the limit so was thinking of ordering one from sheldon brown. didn't see any hoods on his site that looked like mine.

Anyone know which brake hoods i should search for based on this pre-wreck photo (there are more in the album):

Thanks in advance. Wear those helmets everyone!

Probably be a good idea to do a Dr. visit & get checked out considering the headache & what sounds like a pretty bad haematoma. Campy Athena used those same hoods if its any help, might be less expensive or you could shop for Dia Comp in tan which will fit & will be your least expensive option. Here's a pic of the Athena brake hood. Don

Anyone know a good source for emerald green cotton bar tape? That would look great on this machine, IMHO.

Thanks for the help everyone. Now i know which hoods to shop for.

Went to the local minor emergency center based on advice from here and one of my nurse friends. they did a ct scan of my hip (swollen, multicolored) and my head (headache + abrasion from my helmet hitting me hard + on blood thinners so they wanted to be safe). head is fine with no bleeding. have an 8"x4" hematoma (sp?) on my hip that hurts like hell. not sure if has stopped growing yet either. supposed to check with my doc tomorrow. shoulder is very sore also.

Grrr! just as i was getting back into shape and training for a local century later this month (https://ozbikeclub.com/ww1002007.html).

Now i'll be off the bike at least one week if not several. Very disappointed & sad. That ride in 2005 was my first century and it was 7 months after open heart surgery! i was slow but i finished with energy to spare and happy as spring sunshine! couldn't ride much last year. was hoping to be slightly faster this year if the wind allows. guess i'll shut up now as i still have so much to be thankful for.

I had thought about green bar tape too but love the white as it makes the green pop. green tape may look a little '70s? was thinking of getting a white saddle someday. What do you guys think about a white saddle?

thanks again everyone,

jeroen

Glad to hear you're not seriously injured. Since I got back into bikes in 03, I've only had one low speed mishap on a vintage BMX bike, knock on wood!! White saddle and wrap would work, maybe some skinwalls, the dark type though. The brownish orange color.,,,BD

Been there train track-wise. Don't know if everyone realizes just how dangerous they can be. Similar thread in the commuting section on "should one wear gloves." My train track experience put me down so fast I had no chance to react, put gravel into my palms so deep I was picking it out for a month. Wrong angle of track to and bit of dew or moisture from fog and it was all over.

Get well soon. . .

I can sympathize. Eighteen months ago, I crossed some streetcar tracks at the wrong angle (too acute) and wound up with four stitches over my left eye, a fractured right wrist, and a separated left shoulder A-C joint. The mishap was pretty spectactular as my sixty-something body flew about fifteen feet without the benefit of wings before hitting the pavement - hard. The ER doc said they treat two or three bike accident riders a week who have taken the "MUNI dive" (MUNI is the San Francisco Municipal Railroad).

Time heals.
