Butted tubing

I've searched through the archives, but can't find a description. What does it mean when a bike has "butted tubing."

I don't mean double-butted, triple-butted, or quad-butted. I know what those mean.

I mean "butted tubing." Is that the same thing as single-butted tubing? Or is it something else? I know I read it here once, but I just can't find the answer.

I think butted tubing just refers to it being any number of buttings - i.e. - double, triple, quadruple etc. - as opposed to straight gauge...

Blue Order,

This article looks to be a bit dated, but a quick scan makes it look like it is still valid.

I think you are correct in thinking butted and single butted can be the same.

J.T.,

This article says that some tubes only have a variation in thickness at one end, and thus 'single butted'.

J.T.,

Since materials are so competitively priced these days I doubt that there is much 'single butted' tubing around.

virtually every seat tube in a double-butted set is a single-butted tube: no butting at the top where the seat post is inserted...of course there are exceptions to everything Cinelli brazed in a sleeve at the top, but that sleeve was added to an unbutted section.

I believe that when they mention 'Butted Tubes' they are stating that the frame is built with tubing that uses the butting process to reduce frame weight. If you have a look at Reynolds tube decals, they often mention that some or most tubes are butted - meaning that the stated tubes are mainly double butted or butted at each end and as unworthy mentions, the seat tube is butted at one end. The frame has butted tubes.
