Peugeot PX50 from Japan

Greetings,
I just received photos of a PX50 (i.e., equivalent of U.S. UE8?) from a gentleman in Japan for posting on my https://www.retropeugeot.com/ website. He was wondering about the production year and meaning of the "C" at the beginning of the serial number located on the metal plate, underside of bottom bracket. The serial number is C 341760. The bike looks like an early 1970s to me. Yes, I know that serial numbers during this time are of limited usefulness for dating Peugeots. Any thoughts or help? Thanks.
Sincerely,
Tom Simmons
(Other photos of the bicycle are posted on my website)

Tom,

I have no info on the PX50, but I did want to compliment you on the site updates. Also, was there a UE-8 pic in the '77 flyer??

I think I'm going to start scanning pictures tonight for you from the '82 and '84 flyers.

It's hard to tell from the photos but it almost looks like that PX-50 is running 650B wheels while I would bet the UE8 had 27" wheels. I have an 50's era PX-45 (mixte) that has 650B wheels and it has the exact same fenders as the PX-50 in the photo, identical down to the lights and rear rack. I actually just found some original fenders on ebay from a guy in France so I'm going to replace my chrome fenders with the original aluminum ones but that's a different story...

My early/mid 70's UO8 came with a black plastic rear derailleur and slightly more modern looking crank while my PX-45 has a very similiar derailleur and crank (though with a 3-speed cluster). The differences could be model-based otherwise my guess would place the PX-50 back in the 60's.

1960s

After reading you comments, this gentleman's PX50 is looking similar to me to the 1960's PX50's pictured on the Cycles Retro Peugeot https://home.wanadoo.nl/peugeotshow/ website (e.g. 1962 catalog). That might explain why the bike has a six digit serial number. I thought the decals on his seat tube and down tube were early 1970s, but I will await the experts' thoughts. In any case, he has a great looking bike. Six photos are posted on the UE page of my https://www.retropeugeot.com/ website.

UE-8 1977 Catalog

Dear Aaron,
Thanks. No, the 1977 brochure only describes, but does not picture the UE-8.
Sincerely,
Tom

I've been on vacation and havent been able to keep up on the postings. When I get home I'll dig up what I can on the PX-50 to try and narrow down a date range.

Tom, is the '77 cataloge dated? Do You know the country of origin?

Jim

Tom, I have a picture of a 1974 PX50. The bike your inquiring about is a dead ringer for the picture I have. Everything is almost identical.

1972 sounds right.

I'm building a high end version of the Peugeot PX50 randonneur with a Peugeot PX10 frame. 650B Shimano Nexave Wheel set... front wheel will have a built in dyno hub. Panaracer Col De Vie 650B X 38 tires, SKS black fenders, Jandd Expedition Front and Rear racks, Brooks Conquest saddle and Nitto Albatross handlebar. NuVinci internal hub with 20T sprocket and 42T chainring. To solve the brake reach issue in converting from 700C to 650B a pair of Tektro long-reach R556 sidepull brake calipers will be installed. I hope its going to look at a lot like the PX50 when I'm done, since Peugeot did not export that model to the North American market.

Update: Its looks better than I expected with a high quality frame. This will be a Poor Man's Rene Herse/Alex Singer Randonneur.
