Raleigh Olympian...worth fixing up?

I recently found a Raleigh Olympian for virtually nothing. It has Raleigh 502 Chome-moly tubes, Diacompe side-pull brakes, Suntour gear shifters (handle stem) and front derailleur, and Shimano Tourney rear derailleur. Made in Taiwan.

Anyone got any infomation on this bike? Is it worth buying modern components for it? Or should I just do a clean up?

Thanks !

I like mine! I use my Olympian as my foul weather bike.

Leave the original components on it, clean it up real good, and ride the heck out of it.

Yeah, I'm sure the tubes are Raleigh 502 Chromoly. My gear shifters is also on the handle bar stem, instead of the down tube. The Olympian word is also in script font instead of small block letters.

Should be a cool ride, why not clean it up and get on the road and then tear it down this winter and do all the stuff you want to do

Can anyone tell me a little about this bike? As far as I know, its an entry level bike. How much could one of these go for ?

Not much. Here's a stem-shifter model that went for $36 on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Raleigh-Olympian...QQcmdZViewItem

Well, not too low on the entry level scale. The Olympian was a higher level bike than the Record and I think it was a higher level than the Marathon, but I'm not sure about that one.
IMHO, those 502 Chro-moly frames are very nice. More lively than Hi-tensile steel frames. I'm flipping the green Marathon below (actually, it's probably sold). The Record is my winter beater. It's in the basement now getting ready for some minor upgrades and new tires.
I think you've found a great fun bike that's not terribly valuable, but still a nice rider that you don't have to worry about scratching or getting wet. BTW, that ebay price is misleading. These 502 bikes easily bring in about $80-100 on CL in my area.

Ahh thanks!

What is the difference between the 555SL and the 502 frames?
