Just won a Gios Torino!!!

I've always wanted a Gios Torino and I finally just won one! I'm told that it's a 1974 Super Record, I paid $355 for it which is probably a bit overpriced however it's a thing of beauty and has already been professionally repainted so the seller saved me a bunch of work. Planning on probably putting a Campy Super Record groupo on it, haven't decided yet though. Guess my 1990s Serotta wasn't vintage enough for me I think it's funny how this frameset is actually older than I am

I don't know what's with all the Gios' showing up lately but I'm
getting the jones real bad for one.

we do expect pictures of the bike when it's built up.

Gios is a REAL nice bike. I think you did well if the repaint is as good as it looks. Someone else was willing to pay $350 for it, you would have kicked yourself for not paying $355 to own it. That will look great built with SR, maybe white cable and tape for some understated bling.

I think you will be pleased for many years with your purchase. Nothing rides like quality Italian,

They are super riding frames. If I could only keep one of my vintage bikes it would be my '78 Super Record. I would not have to think twice.

$355 for a recently repainted one isn't overpaying at all if you were likely going to have it repainted anyways. Some people devalue a frame after repaint, some don't, it's up to personal opinion.

Super Record would look great, though a '74 frame would have come with first Generation S.Record if you wanted to be period correct. The early S.Record commands quite a price from what I've seen. Regardless of what flavor of Campagnolo you hang on it, it will most certainly be a looker.

I, like Lotek, have always had a place in my heart for Gios. 3 reasons. Geometry, color and chrome.

Nice find and no, you didn't overpay.

Big Gios seem to be scarce. Thsy also generally have short top tubes for the seat tube size, this bike looks like the year stated, '74 where the top tube is a bit longer. I think $355 is a bit under priced, my guess is that the blue at least on my monitor looks a bit off, possibly light and a bit too bright. Gios blue is I think a challenge to copy. '74 would not have Super Record as much as pantographed Nuovo Record, seatpost, chainring... with superleggere pedals, Nisi rims.

I own one but it is too small, for the spouse, a "matching" one my size will show up one day...
The "earlier" bikes like this one impress me a bit more, before investment cast lugs, internal cable routing....

My bet is that the seller of this frame lost money on it in large amounts, to your benefit.

So, pictures when it is done please.

One detail of this frame could make it a bit later, short dropouts, I will have to check mine, could be '75/'76.

anyone know how accurate the new decals are for this year Gios? Should I buy another set and put the Super Record decal on the Top tubes when I get it?

The early/mid 70's bikes should have the script lettering on the top-tube, not the big panel one that is available. You can no longer get the original one but perhaps you can have one made. Here's a catalog shot of a 70's bike:

I also like the blue panels, which some of the early bikes came with. I had them put on mine even though incorrect for the year as I prefer them to the white ones.

My '74 Gios Record, is all blue, graphic panels are empty, so read blue, gold outline on the lettering, Columbus tubing transfer on the downtube, probably due to it being a small frame, Long Campagnolo dropouts, drilled for styling, panto parts include seatpost, chainring, chrome fork, 32 hole wheels. my guess is this recently purchased frame is younger '76? '77?. Mine also has the "GT" decorative BB cut outs.

Do you by any chance have a picture of your's? It was repainted so I'm thinking it's possible that the decals he used on this one aren't an exact match to the originals so it's possible that this frame had the empty graphic panels and such as your's does. Once I actually get the frame in my hands I'm sure I'll be able to tell more from looking at it.

My guess is the graphis are a bit off, but you will have to consider the probable year, if the drive side dropout lacks the lands for the "Portacana" (sp) then that, while not perfect would assist in indicating a date, I do not see the threaded mounting holes, if it has the lands with no holes then it would indicate later after Campagnolo gave up on that device.

Regarding images, I need to locate some software that my current system does not have at the moment, both cameras are shut out from the operating system running email...a number os system things are outstanding, I even have a DSL modem that has been waiting for my attention for a month. A few minuted here and there I have, the potential hours required to get new software happy is another story. So, do not hold your breath.
