Schwinn Tempo vs. Miyata 110
 

Hello everybody, this is my first post here. I'm looking into getting my first road bike, something cheap, so I can train for a triathlon. I've found a Schwinn Tempo from the mid '80's and a Miyata 110 from the same era. They are both in real good condition and both fit me. Which do you think is the better bike? The Schwinn is going for $150 and the Miyata is going for $190.

Schwinn Tempo gets my vote.:D

I have a tempo and a miyata 112.I'm Assuming the 112 is higher in the line up than the 110. I like my tempo a lot better. Welcome to the c/v forum. People here are friendly and helpful.

Thanks for the help everybody! Well, I have one update... the guy found out that the tempo was worth a bit more and is now selling for $220. Is that still a good deal for this bike? Here is a link that has info on it. http://gainesville.craigslist.org/bik/350970290.html

BTW, I'm 6'3'' and weight 205lbs. I assume the 63'' frame is about the right size, i'm going to look at it tomorrow, but I'm not too heavy for it am I?

I have a 110. I have put a couple hundred miles on it, and I like it.

In my opinion over 200 bux for a twenty year old bike is too much. I paid 80 bux for mine last year.

I paid $2 for my tempo. Makes ya sick dont it. I have seen tempos go for $300 on ebay. Hagle, try to stay under $200. I am 6ft 215lb and the bike holds up fine.Looks like the right sze but ou need to ride it to be sure.

Miyata all the way...especially over a Schwinn...

I would take the Tempo as well. I love my Prelude, and it's a little further down the line. If it's in really nice shape and ridable I'd pay $200 at the absolute most. Miyata, especially over a Schwinn? The upper model
Schwinns during that period were very nicely made and rode well. We're not talking Varsity's and Collegiates here?,,,,BD

My lowly Prelude in Columbus Tenax. Damn near the nicest bike I own. If the Tempo is nicer than this, it truly is a sweet ride IMHO.

The guy who is selling it just replaced a lot of parts w/ brand new stuff... he put new tires, cables, Shimano cassette, chain, and a Salee Royal- OCR saddle on it. He rode it about 100 miles he said but found that it was just too big for him. W/ these new parts do you think the $220 is worth it? Its at a consignment shop and basically they can't budge.

There are two ways to look at it. One view might be that it's a twenty year old bike so shouldn't be worth more than $150 or $200, even with the new parts. Another view is that an equivalent bike new today would set you back $1000 or more.

Personally, I think it's easily worth $220 if it's straight, doesn't have any rust, and has the new parts on it.

I've never rode a Miyata but I love my '88 Tempo. Very smooth ride. I'm the second owner and gave $50 for mine. Go with the Tempo.

I did go with the tempo. I just got it on Saturday and went for about a 6 mile ride. The bike is in pretty good shape but I definitely need a new seat! It has a Selle Royal Viper on it, not sure if its good or not but it definitely hurts! I think I'm going to get a Brooks B-17. I also want to get clipless pedals for it... any recommendations on those? I would prefer pedals that would also allow me to ride w/ regular shoes just in case I want to ride to school and not use my bike cleats. I really want to re-paint it, its a light blue right now, but I think I'll leave it. (its the color of bikedued's prelude above) I also want to get break levers that allow me to put the break lines under grip tape... any ideas of what I should go with for those? I'll get some pics up soon, but I'm in the middle of studying for finals! thanks for all the help!

Wow, not even the Tempos got aero levers? I converted my Prelude above, with some Dia Compe Gran Compe levers I got used at a bike shop. It really cleans up the look, and makes the bikes look a lot better. Not to mention not worrying about tangling your hand in the levers while switching hand positions. Not a big worry, but I'm sure it could happen at the most inopportune time. The cables under the tape also makes for a more hand comfortable shape.,,,,,BD
