I had one of that vintage and color.
It looks like it has the stock gearing, as I remember a 14 to 26 tooth free wheel with 49 and 52 tooth chain rings. This arrangement gave a near exact geometric gear progression as in shift the freewheel to a smaller cog, drop to the 49 tooth chain ring, then go to the 52 tooth chain ring and ect.
I believe the derailer had a little longer cage to deal with this. I always thought this was kind of cool, myself only use three or four gears anyway, so I never carried that on with other bikes I had.

That is considerably wider than the original gearing; the low gear cog looks like 34 teeth, rather than 26.

The original 52-49 / 14-16-18-23-26 gearing is great, except for the big hole in a crucial part of the progression. This is a superb opportunity for an ultra-6 freewheel upgrade, either 14-16-18-20-23-26 (use with 52-49 on the flats, 52-44 in the hills) or 14-16-18-21-24-26. A standard Campa. NR or even a Gran Sport or Record should be able to handle it fine. I run 49-46 instead of the original 52-48 on Capo #2, for the sake of my knees.

Good point John E, since 6 speed freewhels came along shortly after I was racing. Will they work with out further modifications on these old 10 speeds?

One can generally simply replace a standard 5-speed freewheel with an ultra-6, with perhaps a slight tweak of one or both limit screws. This is one of my few non-original concessions to rideability, along with KoolStop brake pads and modern tires.

Capo #1: frame spread from 120 to 128mm; currently using 126mm axle with standard 6-speed freewheel

Capo #2: original Campa. high-flange rear hub, 120mm OLD; 14-16-18-21-24-26 ultra-6 freewheel used with period-correct aluminum Simplex 49-46 chainrings instead of original steel Agratis (52-48 and 52-46 combinations seen on various Capos of this vintage). Original Campa. Gran Sport derailleur set.

I simply cannot get both the range and tight-ratio progression I need with 5 cogs. I find 7 cogs adequate, and I can usually make do with 6. In the early 1970s I tried 50-42 / 14-16-18-20-23 for hills and 50-47 / 14-16-18-20-23 for flats, but both combinations work alot better for me with the addition of a 26T grannie on the freewheel.

I have thought about trying that, my bike has very little room. I was thinking if I had to, I could shift the hub over to the left by modifying or making spacers and redishing the wheel. I dont want to alter the frame
I tried a 700 wheel on the front, it looks like I can use those, my frame is so tight the brake pads are all the way up and the 700 wheel seems to be a little smaller. I will have to play around with that and see if I can squeeze another cog in there.

Congrads! I'm running the other version of the Rally RD on my '66 Paramount with an Suntour Ultra 6, 13-32. And I tripilized the front, 49-42-31. I hardly use the "granny" combinations, but at the end of a ride when the grade pushes 8% or better, my nearly 50 year old too heavy body appreciates all the help I can find.

They are great riding bikes that descend at speed with no problems. Yesterday I rode with Charlie who rides a $6000+ carbon fiber Triathalon bike. We descended a steep 2 mile long hill that drops us from 1300+ feet to just below 800 feet. I topped out at 45 mph and only touched the brakes when I passed the orange "Equipment in Road Ahead" sign. It felt like it took Charlie another 5 minutes to reach me at the bottom. I had enough time to stop, dismount, and make an adjustment on the FD.

Dang, that is sweet! Foam bar covering was just the thing in the late 60s. Kool Gear hadn't invented it, so we used refrigeration insulation from the hardware store. I had a Louison Bobet in the same color and the same bar covering stolen from my junior college, summer 1969.

Nope no dings anywhere on this old bike, and I got it from the original owner, he did replace the wheels at some point with some tubulars with phil hubs. He told me that he had the originals somewhere and was going to look for them, but I was happy "as is"

Bob, in the Greek? If English, which version?

Are we referring to the reference to "peddling"?

Last week, people were posting about their "dream" bike. THIS Paramount would have been my "dream" bike, IF it had been red. But the green is sharp looking.

Thanks for posting this "find". Good to know we shouldn't give up hope of finding this treasure.

He told me that he had a Raleigh Professional, but right away told me that it was not for sale !! then he said "I have an old Schwinn Paramount too", but that the tires were bad, and it hasn't been ridden in a long time.. I asked to see it if he was intersted in selling, he said yes, and then said he would take 200 for it.. I ran to the bank got the cash, and loaded it up with the Trek. He was happy, and I was too ! Cool thing is that he was the original owner, and a cool charater, a DJ from the Dallas area. Now I just want to find some decals so I can get it repainted in original campus green. Anyone know where I can get some ??
