Rebirth of a beat up Viscount

Recently I bought a beat up Viscount frame (no forks, and stripped BB) for $2.26. Of course I didn't know the BB was stripped or I probably would have passed, but anyway I bought it.

when I received it, it looked far worse than the picture. All of the black areas on the before photo are imitation carbon fiber contact paper.

This weekend I stripped it to bare metal and cut off the broken braze ons, then gave it a quick paint job. Surprisingly it turned out quite nice, so my sub-three dollar frame will soon be a fixie. Here are before and after pics:

Nice ... what did you do, to strip it to bare metal?

What goes into a quick paint job?

I used spray can paint remover and a green scouring pad to strip it. I then gave it a coat of primer (new auto rattle can with directional nozzles) and a base coat of the blue. I gave it a second coat of blue, then the black got 2 coats as well. I don't like the quality of the rattle can clear coats, so I am probably going to take it to my brothers body shop for a few coats with wet sanding. I call it a quickie job because I did it in my barn and it was done in one day, waiting 1/2 hour between applications. I then let it cure under heat for 24 hours then without heat for another 24.

ok, quick question.
Did that viscount have suntour ratchet shifters?
if you bought the complete bike did it have suntour cyclone derailleurs?
Reason I'm asking is I had that model, sold in in Fairfax va.
size looks right and it was the black/silver aerospace pro. . .
would be kind of funny but you never know.
(btw it did not have faux carbon when i owned it!)

No, it had nothing. It was just the stripped down frame and all of the rest was removed. It was supposed to include the BB, but apparently for $2.26, he thought I didn't need it. Since the BB is stripped, I resorted to a cheapo threadless.

If you are using a threadless BB, what are you going to do with that untapered crankset?

hint hint

Well, I finally finished assembling my Viscount beater fixie/ss conversion. The paint didn't turn out too well after I put on the clear coat, but I will ride it for awhile then maybe paint it again later.

Sorry, the seller kept it. I just got the frame with nothing else. I ended up with the forks and headset from Harris, cranks and seatpost from ebay, seat, stem and bars from my pile of parts, and wheels and cogs from my lbs. I came in at just under $170 for everything, most in the wheels.

Ah, memories. The Aerospace was my first "real" bike. I still have in peices, but its not really original any more. You've given me an idea, make it into a SS.
