The Trek 620

Hey everybody, I've just purchased a Trek 620 from 1983, I was wondering if people have any experience with this bike. All the components are OEM, are they all pretty good or should I change any of them out before doing a very long tour on it. I've heard from the venerable sheldon brown that the helicomatic hubs in the rear are less than awesome, have other people had this experience? Any wisdom on this bike?

Congratulations on your bike! Take a picture of it for us. The cool thing about these old bikes are the simplicity of the components. I suppose if everything was in good shape I'd just ride it as is.

Actually, I'm probably not the guy you should ask because I have a bad habit of changing out components.

Don't worry about the Helicomatic unless the cogs are worn. Just get prepared and keep yours eyes out for, and bid cheaply on, appropriate rear wheels until one slips through and into your hands.
