Removing Super Record hub dustcaps

Removing Super Record hub dustcaps
I've removed the dust caps on Campy Super Record hubs a dozen or so times yet have never learned how to do it properly. I've used a screwdriver, a cone wrench, an allen wrench, and probably a few other things. I havent found anything that wont dent or scratch the little metal dust shields. How do you do it?

How about not removing them? If there is grease in the back side ther is too much grease. Pipe cleaner bent well and some thinner will make short work of the excess, then just be careful upon repack, if you have big fingers get a pair of tweezers. Only time I have removed them was for track race wheels when I was a Junior category racer, and had access to some prototype synthetic oil.

Just a bit of trivia - Campagnolo made a small ring spanner to remove the dust caps. It was a round hole with the knurled grip cut into the hole (sometimes they appear on ebay). Other than that - the small flat screwdriver seems to work ok

I bent a coat hang to I could put one finger through it and it had hook ends on either side (this is just a short piece I clipped, a hanger was the best piece of malleable metal strong enough om hand). I damaged one set of caps in the process, which as you know, you end up filing to smooth out again. Anyway, once I perfected the shape of the hook I could pull them out without affecting the deep inner flange which is what gets ruined and ruins the deal or ends up rubbing on the cone if you damage it.

Yeah - your right Cylotoine - I didn't read the original thread correctly.
For the hub dust caps it is easier to take the axle out and tapping the dust cap out from the opposite end. I modified the blade of an old flat screwdriver by bending it over 90 degrees (a cheapy from walmart won't snap off). Cut the handle off the screwdriver so you can poke the shank through the hub and hook the flat side of the blade onto the dustcap. Then lightly tap and rotate the 'tool' with a small hammer. The cap should come out quite easily.
