    The lowrider is not detachable from the front rack which carries the handlebar bag, both parts are fully integrated :

    I think the SR Custom half step and a granny is really cool as well. I'm a fan of the Takagi Tourney XT and AD, but I don't know that it's necessarily an increase in quality or cool, unless you're looking to take your middle ring from like a 45 to the 38. I had one on my old Trek 420 and love the look of the SR Custom- it has that 70s chainring style to it.

    Thanks. The cranks are in great shape, but geared really tall for a touring bike. It's got a 118mm BCD which is obsolete and 36T is the smallest chainring you can use. That gives me a low gear of 36-32 which is 30.5 inches, kinda high if loaded touring. Also, the 47T middle ring is kind of large and I never use the 52T. I'd like to actually be able to tour on it, so that's the reasoning for the change to the Takagi Tourney.

    That totally makes sense.

    I think mine was a 50-45-28. I even thought yours looked bigger- especially the granny- when I was comparing the two pics.

I was going to shorten the straddle cable thinking someone along the way put an extra long one on the brakes, but your's looks like the same length. I usually set them up so the cable barely clears the tire or fender.

    I've got kool stop grey pads on there, and it brakes well. They aren't super grabby, but they have good modulation. The straddle cable is like 210mm, I think and no longer available. I think if you change the straddle, you may need to go a different length anyway, so why not shorter for more leverage? Let me know how it works if you do.

    After a long inner debate, my M1000 is going touring/gravel bike. Got the racks from my friend, who had been hoarding them for years. He never even showed them to me until yesterday. After that we hit Sprockets in Porter, TX, and I found the perfect set of bars for it. Later 80's Specialized black stem, and silver specialized bars with 105 levers and Benotto tape, for $20. I have the like new brake levers I got from a member here on the Super Course thread, and I will likely go with black wrap to tie in the saddle and fenders. Gonna be a nice setup, and quite a few pounds lighter than my old Maroon Schwinn Sierra. I have the bars bolted on now, but the cables are still hooked up to the old bars. I am going to do new cables, and save the original housings and rope brake cables.,,,,BD

    Then.... I will have to afford some bags at some point. Front rack is a Japanese Showa brand, and the rear is a Jim Blackburn. Somewhere along the line, a paint job will be in order, and a color decision will have to be made. I have the Mazda Sepang green, but the decals are white. It would make them hard to read. Polished has always been a dream of mine, but again the decals would disappear. Maybe a dark burgundy, with eventually a honey B.17 and matching wrap. I have had the decals since about 2005 or 06, from Vintage Cannondale.

    Another Six Ten, the second-to-last version offered I believe.

    Daf1009's Six-Ten from the previous page was perhaps the last, and best, 610 produced, with upgraded fork and crankset.

    This one does errand duty, often out of town, and is used as an off-road bike as well.
    I can't say enough for the handling and durability.


    Eight or ten years ago, these bikes were flooding into the thrift stores, but not any more.
    This one showed up at Goodwill, already well-used, for $24.95.
    Upgrades include wider gearing front and rear, as well as indexed shifter installed by the PO.
    Some Shimano hoods fit on the DiaCompe levers, and the Multito counter came installed on the front axle.

    Here's the latest iteration of my Specialized Expedition. I built it up with wide, compact bars to better handle the occasional dirt trails, and cheap Kenda K830 tires with a "mocha" sidewall. The tires where an experiment, they work well but are much smaller than the advertised 38mm width, measuring 32mm wide and 35mm tall. It's also got a new Sora rear derailleur and a beat up Avocet Touring, it would have been stock.

    The old Cannondale as of this morning. I need a taller stem so I am looking into a Technomic that I will probably paint black. Overall though, nice ride. EXTREMELY nice ride. Plush as all get out. I've got around 50 psi in the Town And Country's, and even took road reflectors in stride.,,,,BD



    And a bonus pic. One of the OLD machines at work. Has art deco styling on the case, so old old! I thought the Carlton name was kind of cool as well.

    That's a very interesting frame. What was its original intent, i.e. touring, CX, or MTB? With your build, it does indeed look very well adapted for touring, but the wheels and bottom bracket height are throwing me - are the wheels 26" or 700C/29er?

    I love it when people post their Expeditions!

    There's something so special about these bikes. I recall someone recently not liking the "battleship grey" but I think that's a huge draw to the "business" of that bike.

    How heavy is it? I have a Stumpjumper Sport- I know that was towards or at the bottom of the Specialized lineup back then- it still had some nice components, but it's a bit of a tank. Whenever I see the Expedition, I think 'that looks heavy' because of the vague resemblance to my Stumpjumper.

    That's a 26" MTB.
