There's something so special about these bikes. I recall someone recently not liking the "battleship grey" but I think that's a huge draw to the "business" of that bike.

How heavy is it? I have a Stumpjumper Sport- I know that was towards or at the bottom of the Specialized lineup back then- it still had some nice components, but it's a bit of a tank. Whenever I see the Expedition, I think 'that looks heavy' because of the vague resemblance to my Stumpjumper.

I love the color too, no flash.

As it is, ~25lbs using the crumby bathroom scale, which is about the same as stock with barcons and light folding tires. Personally the wheels are overbuilt, I could drop at least 1 1/4lb with a different, still very tough wheelset, which I'm considering.

Updating some pix of my 1985 Trek 620.

I replaced the bars and stem to a Nitto Noodle/Dirt Drop combination- it gives me a little more width to have the Acorn Boxy Rando Bag and still use the Command Shifters. I also replaced the boring stock Shimano Cable yokes for the nifty Tektro alloy yokes and replaced the reflector cable hanger with an old Shimano QR unit. I had a bit of a problem with the cables and housing- I bought a Jagwire Road Pro cable kit, and unbeknownst to me, it would not work so well with non-aero levers- there's barely enough brake housing for a full run of housing on a small frame with aero levers, nowhere near enough for a full run with non-aero levers. Also, the XC Pro on there went to my 1984 Voyageur SP- which is coming along slowly- so that was replaced by an XC Comp- and it looks quite sporty on here, I must say.

The rack is screwed to a 4mm or so spacer to the lower braze-on on the fork dropout. This particular model only has a lower braze on on the dropout and one on the rear dropout. I know some 720s from 1984 had dual brazeons on the dropouts, then some had single.

If you're able to zoom in, I also have some Cannondale Pannier hooks on that screw as well. In case I ever find some of the front Cannondale Panniers in good shape. It's interesting that you can find the rears in good shape- to my mind, those are the ones that get used all the time. The small ones are more rare and all beat up.


EDIT: I just saw a 1985 with dual dropout braze-ons. Hmmm.

Golden boy. I see you have a halg-step crank set-up with a granny gear. Does this set-up work well for you?

I have half-step+granny on my touring bike. Love it.

Mine is set up with DT's, though. I think it would be more annoying to combine H/S+G with bar-end shifters, since you have to shift both at once so often.

I think the command shifters here would also be comfortable and convenient to use with H/S+G, but I've never tried anything like them.

I don't use the half-step shifting scheme. I can't count.

I would imagine that shifting scheme would work quite well with the Command Shifters.

By the way- fun little fact- in 1980 Schwinn no longer had the Paramount program, there were no Superiors- the Voyageur was Schwinn's Flagship model that year.

That bike is THE top of the line Schwinn for that year. Kinda makes you enjoy it just a little bit more, eh? :)

Yes the bike has 105 7 speed indexed for my wife. She always complained about friction shifting on her old bike. The bike started out as a $35 scratched up, dirty, most of the decals ripped or missing flip bike. After I cleaned it up and got it ready to sell, my wife just really liked the black and chrome look. She wanted me to fix it up really nice for her. So 105`s, new wheels like the ones she likes on the new bikes at the bike shop, Weinmann Momentum with Votoria Rubino Slicks 700 x 25 C, 7 Speed Origin8 Cassette her Selle Italia seat and Suntour Cyclone Pedals. Everything else is original. She weighs in at 25.2 pounds as she sits, empty bag and water bottle. I was able to buy the Voyageur 11.8 decal on ebay but I had to make the rest myself. The bag is a Voyageur, Scott Tinley. The bike will be used for light touring, day trips.
