Keener splendor
I just picked up a Panasonic Pt-5000 last night and I am wondering where to find information about this bike-specifically geometry. I bought the bike from the original owner and it is in very nice shape but the chainstays are not as long as I expected them to be. Maybe I am just used to my Cannondale which has very long stays. Anyway, I will post pics later when the sun comes up.

1975 Motobecane Grand Touring. Purchased new in '76. Panniers were bought at the same time for a 12 day ride through northern Pennsylvania. They're army surplus back packs slung over the carrier.

I really dig the canvas rucksacks as bags. I was trying to figure out a way to do that, get two M1945 bags and devise a mounting strategy...

I just tied the shoulder straps together and as I said, slung them over the carrier. My original carrier was the ubiquitous Pletscher. I put cardboard into a sleeve in the back of the bags to give them a bit more rigidity. I used them for about 2,000 miles of touring.

In 1979, I did something similar with a pair of nylon rucksacks that I got from Kmart. I cut a piece of 1/8 inch peg board for a stiffener and hooked the straps over my Pletscher rack. It worked for a 4 day tour right before I left for the Navy. My handlebar bag was a 6-pack cooler on a front rack.

After a year or two of sitting around with no wheels and no derailleurs or shifters, I decided to revive my Moto Grand Touring. It's looking pretty good. Schwalbe Active series HS-159 tires, Cyclone M-II derailleurs, and a set of wheels with Mavic Rims and Pelissier hubs. Fenders are SKS chromoplastic striped style. It rode pretty nice with the boat anchor large flange hubbed wheels I put on it to ride when the tire took two weeks to show. It should ride even better with the lightweight wheels and new Schwalbe's. I may change the bars and brake levers for something more fancy looking. I may even put the turkey levers back on if the bars stay the same. It's always been one of my prettiest bikes.,,,,BD

Tange Infinity tubes and Suntour XCD Group, a downspecced bike compared to the one sold in the US some years before, Still a solid (and heavy) touring bike:

I think if you look at other touring bikes at this time, across the board- they weren't specced with the top of the line stuff like in the early/mid 80s. Looking at the 84/85 Pro Tour- that bike had THE BEST components of its day on there.
XCD was nice, but lacked the satin-y glow finish the XC Pro and XC Comp stuff got.
I'm also pretty surprised to not see a unicrown fork on there.

Well, a triple crank, low gears out back and some barcons. Has eyelets on the drop outs. Big Phil Wood type touring hubs and Mavic Module 4 rims. Certainly set up for something like touring.
For that matter, I have a 73 Gitane Tour De France that the original owner set up with different gears and panniers abd rode across the country on the BikeCentennial. Touring bike? I'd say any bike that you set up to take a tour on is a touring bike. YMMV.....

You've probably seen this scan of the 1977 brochure but it seems there were 3 models in the 60 group that year - the P, the PR and the PX with just the PX described as being made with Reynolds tubing. And as you say, there were other letter models but in 1975 there were just 2 - the PA and the PX. COme to think of it, I only know mine was a '75 from the seller's description.
I hope you will post pictures when you get round to working on your PR. As you say, it looks to be complete. Good luck!

The frame being a tad smallish for me probably has something to do with it. But I did recently get hold of a PA60 frame, which I built up with stuff from the parts bin. It's a 64cm frame, which provides a nice French fit:

Sorry just now saw this.. As far as I know, it is a 78 model. I bought it from the estate sale of the original owner. He also had an owners manual, and a brochure from that year. Sadly I sent the manual and brochure to a member here to be scanned, and never got either one back.,,,,BD

I just picked up this 1982 Trek 720. This is my 2d Trek 720 since I also own a 1983 Trek 720. The bike I picked up has a mix of components. I need to get this bike mechanically sound to get it ready for touring use but the bike is in very solid cosmetic shape with pretty good components. These are pics of the bike as found in the wild.

The bike posted has a short wheelbase with short chainstays- one bottle braze on, no rack mounts, sidepulls, and it doesn't look like there's a lot of clearance for bigger tires.
Yes, you could tour on it, but it looks to be a purpose built racer that someone swapped out some parts on.
