The Moto looks very late 70's. I had a 78 catalog, and half of the bikes had the older styling, and the upper end had the newer strobe stripe decals. I would think by 83 most all of the models had the newer styling.,,,,BD

For me, being on the tall side of short, I'm aware that I could squeeze onto a lot of different sized bikes- but when you get to that 66+ size frame- there's almost literally nothing out there for you. I'm so glad you found that- and not just that you found 'one,' but you found a nice bike at your size.

Best.

I'll be starting the refurb of this '84 Univega Gran Tourismo shortly. Pic is 'as purchased' last summer

I've been slowly acquiring pieces-parts to rebuild it in my own style.
Pictured here is the Fujita Belt saddle, brown marble 'cork' bartape, VO brown brake cables (I couldn't find the original dark brown housing anywhere)
a six-speed SunTour 13-28 freewheel, SunTour barcons with bare stainless shift cable housing. Not pictured is a better seatpost...

VO 45mm Facette ribbed fenders and the ubiquitous Pasela PT 27x1-1/4s

I'm still looking for suitable rack(s).

I get a sense that's a tall bike, but usually judge from the head tube. How tall is it?

A 27"(68cm) Fuji Del Ray showed up on my fairly local craigslist just the other day for $200. I have to ask, with that tall of a frame, how squirrly is it? I have a 25" Trek 520 and it isn't bad, but not as stiff feeling as my 23" frames, so I wonder how another 2"+ would be?

brown marble 'cork' bartape,

I'm still looking for suitable rack(s).
What are you using for the bar tape? I REALLY liked Bontrager's brown tape- but they changed it this year. I haven't tried the new stuff- my guess is that I'd really like it.

What's your thought on the rack? I've been through this- is it best with one solid mount to the brake bridge, or with 2 P-clamps on the stays? In my case, I opted for the mount to the brake bridge.

It is in the pieces-parts pic above. Brown swirl 'cork'-look tape.

Whatever I get it will mount to the seatstay bosses. You can see the boss(es) about 1-1/4" above the bridge on the inside of the stays.

Yeah, it's frustrating, to put it mildly. Don't forget, sometimes clicking on a pic will enlarge it. Not the case here so much, but it just worked on a different pic, that was cropped for ads.

Back in the 1980's MIELE bicycles had a touring model the "TOURISTA" with cantilever brakes and a triple crankset. The frameset was closer to a sport-touring bike and rode very well as an unloaded road bike as well as loaded touring bike. I bought a used 1980s MIELE UNO and had brazeons for cantilever brakes, rack mounts on the seatstay, and extra bottle mount under the downtube added to it by True North Bicycles in Guelph, Canada. it's almost like the "TOURISTA" except the "TOURISTA" didn't have the seatstay rack mounts 9it used P-clips) nor did it have the under the downtube third bottle mount.

From this (my 1st rebuild of it)

I was wondering what brand!

I totally didn't see the bosses- I was expecting to see the brazed on barrels- now that I look- you can totally see the boss on the inside of the seat stay. My Treks all have the barrel bosses, my Voyageur SP has the boss in the seat stay. When I first mounted the rack to the VSP, I was so nervous about chipping the paint...

Yes, those particular seat posts are heavy and leave a lot to be desired. 26.8?

Yep, 26.8. Same seatpost that came on my other '84 Univega - a Viva Sport, but someone cut that one at the minimum insertion line, leaving barely 3/4" in the seat tube.
I have several 26.8 posts to choose from.

Yeah, even here in Japan it is unknown (only 2 websites have info). It was a middle of the line Bridgestone originally costing ¥78,000 ($537.93 in 1990). Last of the great Japanese touring bikes from the 80's touring trend.

I was worried that once I had it all together that it would track to the left or right. I had a Monterey that tracked pretty badly to the left. But once it was together and I rode it (30 miles yesterday), it was perfectly straight. Hands off, no problem. I was hoping to make this my touring bike, but it's so much heavier than my '98 Pinarello. The tires are rated 85psi, and they're aren't many gears to choose from. This will be my family bike ride bike.

As far as stiffness, I don't have enough power anymore to flex the frame too much. Definitely not a performance machine, I can tell you that. It's more of a bearded professor in a tweed jacket.

Actually clicking on it did allow me to see the whole picture.
Why did it take me a whole day to do this?
