Schwinn Traveler 1950s, 60s?
Hey guys,
I just found a Schwinn Traveler in a neighbours junk pile. (they were cleaning out a garage in a newly purchased home). It isnt in what you would call mint condition but worth fixing and seems to ride well.
I would like to figure out what year it is from if possible. From other posts about old Schwinn's I think its likely a 60s model. It has a sturmey archer 3 spd rear hub, integral quick stand. It is black or dark navy (faded and chipped) with red and white highlights and ornate fenders.
Problem is I cant find a serial number or any other id. Just a Schwinn Chicago decal.
any hints on where to find the serial number? (its not on the bottom bracket, or anywhere else that i could see in the dim of the night) also any other hints on what I should look for as identifying/giveaway features.
much thanks

If it has a Sturmey Archer hub, an accurate answer to your question is close at hand. Look on the hub. The date will be stamped there. The date is on the outside circumference of the hub between the flanges (between the spokes). It is easy to see - usually right under or to the side of the stamped "Sturmey Archer".
Check and let us know. Post a pick if you can. Sounds fun.

Yeah ... check the left rear drop out, then the head tube (moved there around April of '70).

Then check the chart for the date:

If prior to '60, check this page:

Hey, Thanks guys. Good tips all around
found the serial number L03636 so it looks to have been built between 01/15 and 01/19 in 1954.
the 54 stamp on the SA hub would seem to confirm this.
haven't got very deep into it yet so I cant say how much is original components but I imagine it has sat much of 50 years in someones garage and expect it might be all original
I'll get a pic up soon
thanks

I've not seen the Travelers grow as a "collectible" in the same vein as the Paramounts, Phantoms, Sting-Rays or even Varsities or Continentals. Some years might bring more than others. The '50s models are harder to find, the late '50s/early '60s probably had the best looking decals. Depends on your motivation (trying to replace a bike of your youth for instance). As for using the serial number to nail down the date -- most folks like to know the minutiae of thier vintage bikes.
