Shakedown cruise 71 Varsity

Got the Varsity completely assembled after work today and took it out on a shakedown ride 5 miles and its heavy but rides just like I remembered they did nice and smooth. The old derailleurs worked like a charm easy crisp shifts and the brakes well its steel rimmed but they work fine. I won't be riding this bike in the rain anyway but all in all I'm satisfied. I asked Easthill to post some photos I took of it so when she is gracious enough to find the time there are pictures on the way. Its pretty blingy looking with all that chrome I love it. My wife was impressed she said it was really cool. I saw some things I didn't get completely cleaned up so I will continue to detail it. I might rethink the paint job everyone thats seen it thinks I should keep it green. I don't know I haven 't made up my mind. Maybe you all can help when you see the pics. Thanks for taking the time to read and answer some of the questions I have had along the way. Kudos Sheldon Browns website for valuable info

Green, as in Flamboyant lime possibly? I love that color, and they're pretty rare. I've only seen a couple of Schwinn roadies that color. One was one I missed out on locally. A lime green Continental.,,,,BD

Or is it campus green? A darkish olive sort of shade. Either is nice, and why paint it if it's in good condition?

Replace those steel rims with aluminum and the Weinmann brakepads with KoolStops; you won't regret it.

I have a mid 70s Sport-a-Bout (sp?) in that bright green. My daughter has it borrowed right now. She calls it "Kermit". Pretty little beast (the bike).

Its the campus green. I really like the chrome rims man they are bling. If I do replace with aluminum will I be able to find some that fit the dropout and forks? All the new wheels are too wide

Chrome and campus green does sound very cool! I think you will get many leave it original comments once the pics are up. I have yet to own a campus green Schwinn of any model. Someday...I hope. Everything around here is that metallic red, or the medium blue. It's as if they didn't sell any other colors.,,,,BD

I can get 27" whitewalls if you're interested, they make the Schwinns pop for sure. They sell them on a regular basis at my LBS, I'm not a dealer.....

and then a radiant blue, violet, coppertone, kool yellow (which, BTW, I could help you out with), sunset orange, opaque blue and green, brown, etc., etc,. etc,. The neat thing about Schwinns is that the color choice is nearly limitless.

SB, you did a great job. For the cost of shipping you could tackle this one.

It looks a lot better than mine did when I started. BTW does anyone know where I might find OEM or reproduction brake cable and housing and maybe derailleur cable and housing? They are larger diameter than the stuff I find in the LBS and the e-bay stuff never has really good pictures of the housing the brake stuff is plain grey and the derailleur is fluted.

I never got a chance to send you my e-mail address, you bum! Great job though, and the green is really nice.

I should be able to spot you at the Headwaters Century in Enumclaw in September now .

Nice job, stringbreaker!

I will ditto those who recommend the Kool Stop pads and aluminum rims. The aluminum rims will make the bike feel lighter to ride and will work very well with the Kool Stop pads.

Where can I get these rims and will I have to coldset the frame to make them fit? I still want to be able to use the fenders so if I go with quick change I'll lose that ability

I would relace them to your old hubs so you don't have to mess with any of the cold set stuff.

Or look for wheels off of a donor bike that is set up for 5 speed in the rear.
