Vintage Crank Recommendations
 

I have a vintage Italian road bike from the late 50's, early 60's, an Ideor Asso Special. The bike came with a Columbus frame, Campy 1010 drop-outs, Campy Gran Sport derailleurs, Campy braze-on shifters, Campy large flange quick release hubs, Fiamme Red Label rims with tubular tires, Ideale saddle, Mafac brakes, Ambrosio bars and stem, and Sheffield (made in Italy, despite the name) pedals. The original crankset was a cottered Magistrioni. I'd like to find a period correct cotterless crankset for this bike. Does anyone know what a correct vintage crankset would be (Campagnolo or other Italian brand)? Thanks for the information.

Campagnolo was producing a cotterless Record crank in 1960 which looked very similar to the fairly easy to locate Nuovo Record crankset. Not sure how hard finding an early 60's example will be, but the N.Record would not be an out of place solution.

I agree with cuda2k on the cotterless cranks. Have you tried getting an exact date on your Ideor? There are some Campagnolo sites that may help. Campagnolo introduced the Record cotterless crankset in 1958. I have seen ebay bids ranging from $500 to $1200 for just the cranks and chainwheels depending upon condition and minor nuances such as raised pedal lip and dustcaps. Mid 60's cranksets should be less expensive but, then again I'm not certain if that's true. There is a group of Japanese bidders with a p*****ion for vintage Campagnolo components. Keeps the prices up. Anyway I hope this bit of info helps and don't forget to post some pics.

I would be easier to find and much cheaper to buy period-looking French cotterless cranks from Stronglight or TA.

These filters are amazing. What if I were writing about a donkey? You'd never know it.

Another good choice for the 50's is the three-arm Campy steel crank. Cool. I have 3/4's of a set. Need a left crankarm. The one I'm messing with is cotterless.

Your period correct Italian vendors are Campagnolo, Gnutti, FB and Magistroni. I don't know if FB and Gnutti ever made a cotterless crank before they disappeared. Magistroni did, called the Super Zenith, I have never seen one for sale. That leaves you Campagnolo and the earlier the model, the more money.

Or, as John E suggested, go French with a Stronglight or TA. Abundent and low in price, although I don't care for Stronglight's "star" design but that is only my opinion.
