Gonna sell my Colnago - How much do you think I should ask for?

I have decided to sell my rarely used Colnago.
I used to work in a bicycle shop in the late 80's to early 90's. Back in the day, we were the agents for Colnago, Olmo, Basso, Benotto, Miyata, etc. This bike was built from all new parts that were sitting around the store. This frame is in really good shape, has the orininal paint job and has, maybe, a few hundred miles on it.

It looks like this:
Colnago Super (I think) Columbus SL frame.
Suntour Superbe brakes, deraleurs and chainset.
Suntour Cyclone hubs.
Modolo handlebars & stem.
Stronglight headset.
Mavic Open 4CD rims.

Any ideas what I should be asking?

Thanks.

selling bikes is such a hassle. Tell you what, for $100, I'll take it off your hands and save you the trouble of selling it, win-win!

Beautiful bike. I would put it up on e-bay if you want to get top dollar. Place a reserve of 500$ and watch it go up...You never know.

I believe somewhere in the region of $1000 to $1200 would be fair.

Is that CDN$ or AUS$?

That joke gotten out of the way, I don't think with Suntour components it would go that high. I am a fan of Suntour, so don't take it as bashing. Campagnolo...well now you have a classic Italian frame with classic Italian components.

Nice bike.

Thanks for the input all.

I will measure the bike when i get home later. I seem to remember it is 59cm. I am 5' 11" and it fits me perfectly.

No telling what it will go for. Colnago's seem to draw a premium, which may or may not be deserved.

I can tell you that in the last year I have bought three Italian bikes using eBay. A pantographed Rossin SL with Campy SR cost me under $500(all prices include shipping), Guerciotti SLX w/Campy SR under $700 and a De Rosa SLX w/ Dura Ace 7 speed $800. I would put your Colnago between the Rossin and Guerciotti.

I would think that your bike may do better parted out, I don't think that the component group on it will command top dollar as a complete bike, but may be of interest to some of us old folks looking for bits and pieces.

Bottom line, if it fits you perfectly, ride it. For what you'll get for it you probably wouldn't be able to buy a new Chorus gruppo.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do, I vote to keep it.

So I've decided to sell this bike on ebay. Let's see if it sells.

Just a note on the auction description, expand the details of the components.
List spoke count, chainring & cog sizes, crank arm length, top tube length, brake reach, width of bars, length of stem, seat post diameter, BB width, rear dropout spacing. You get the idea.
That way, a serious buyer can determine if the Super Record gruppo he has will fit this frame.
Oh, and it's usually best to take the picture of the whole bike, from the RIGHT side of the bike.

Good luck with the auction!

Yeah, I'd say you should get $1000 out of it, if its like you say. Campy components would probably get a higher price, but then there are quite a few Suntour followers still around. If you do put it on eBay be sure and trump it up good, telling how clean it really is, and how little it was ridden, and also about the Columbus SL frame, that it was the premier race material of the day. Also trump up the Suntour components and the clean originality of them. Take lots of pics, including the derailleurs and crankset, bars, shifters, etc. Explain about the 'Open 4 CD' wheels, and that they were the high end wheel of choice back in the day, being they were 'Mavics' first "aero-wheels" and such.

Explaining everything about the bike, and taking lots of clear pics tells the potential buyer you're proud of the bike, and want it to fetch the price it deserves.

As a good comparison, back in 2001 my LBS sold a beautiful lugged steel Colnago about that same age. It had all Shimano '600' components and Mavic 'reflex' rims, and they got $1100 out of it. They also had a Tommasini for the same price, with all Shimano '600' components and 'Open 4 CD wheels in about the same pristine condition. The Colnago was beautiful, but the Tommasini was breathtaking, so I bought the Tommasini.

I would part it out personally and sell all the Superbe Pro stuff as a set. That's a sweet ride but most hardcore dorks are going to insist on having Campy on it anyway. You might as well offer them the frameset and let Suntour people fight over the gruppo.

Yes, I think this would have worked nicely as well. The opening bid of 495$USD is a bit daunting to buyers, I think a lower opening bid might have helped get things rolling quicker.

We will see, I am watching the auction If I didn't already have a 60cm Ciocc, this auction would be very tempting, especially since I am in Toronto as well. Did you think of putting it up on Craigslist?

I would replace (temporary or not) the saddle or at least straighten it. I'm looking at an awesome bike with a dull dusted and not correct aligned saddle.

Hope you get a good price, the bike looks great!
