My battered ride

I got asked to put up some pics of my old Peugeot in the 'introduce yourself' bit of the forum, so here we are. Sorry the pics aren't much cop; i took them with my phone.

It's a rather battered Galibier which I bought on Ebay for about $100 when I decided to start riding to work (after a long time without riding - why did I ever stop!). Anyway, I'm loving riding again. I rode it as was for quite a while, but gradually it started falling apart; the rear hub / axle disintegrated on me on the Harbour Bridge, so I got new wheels / cassette, I've replaced the crank/BB, new bars, cabling, pedals... I think the only original bits are the brakes and ders.

And yes, it is also in need of a clean; I haven't done it since riding in in the rain last week. Naughty naughty.

My riding to work has also inspired a colleague to try riding too; following my example he also bought a bike on ebay for $40; that's the 'Apollo' in the picture. Looks like a neat bike; it hardly looks ridden. 27" wheels though; hope the rims are OK for a while!

those both look like decent bikes, good finds. as long as they work and get you back in the saddle, they are worth every penny.

That sounds...interesting.

As long as you are still in one piece, though, that's the important thing .

It wasn't nearly so dramatic as it sounds! There was a kind of grinding noise, then the bike went all weird, wobbling all over the place. I stopped, but couldn't see anything obvious. So I started up again (slowly), there was more grinding, the back wheel went really really wobbly, before twisting on it's axle a few inches and jamming up against the chainstays. I had to carry it the rest of the way to work, but luckily it didn't throw me off the bike.

Took it to a shop near work, they took one look at the (helicomatic) hub, and after s******ing slightly when I innocently asked about getting it repaired said 'we'll order you a new wheel...'

Welcome to the C&V Forum. I'm also a (has-been) trombonist! I blew a little today, in fact.

Hey! Nice to meet you. Trombones and cycles. My twin pleasures. Both offer the option to:
- spend lots of money
- meet nice people
- be perceived as weird
- waste a lot of time on the internet
- attract hot chicks

OK, maybe not number 5...

But number 4 for sure, check out 'tromboneforum.org' for the equivalent time-wasting effort for trombones. You could probably take a 'shimano vs look' debate from here, do a find and replace for 'slide-o-mix' and 'trombotine', and hey presto, have converted a pointless but endless debate from cycling to tromboning...!

I'm laughing over your number 5:

https://www.bikeforums.net/alt-bike-culture/333643-24-wheels-26-cruiser.html

Poor dozur has not been back--I don't think his plan worked.

Better to just enjoy the bikes! The women will show up if they wish (and I can say that, being as I am a female person ).

Anyway, it sounds as if you had quite an interesting time of it with your hub, but at least it did not catapult you off the bridge!
