27" Rim Needed

I am fixing up a nice 1980 something Nishiki that was originally purchased in Japan. I am doing this as a favor for a friend who recently completed the Transamerica route across the US with my daughter and myself. The bike is a nice but not fancy bike in pretty good shape except for having sat in a garage for some years and having had the rear wheel crunched by a car.

I need a replacement rim. The original is labeled Araya 27X1-1/4 and has 36 spoke holes (it had 27X1-1/8" tires). I am hoping to find a used rim for cheap to keep the cost down since the owner is a recent college grad who spent the Summer bike touring and her finances are tight. It would be nice if it were a match for the original, but anything that fits and is serviceable is fine.

The reason for repairing the bike is because of sentimental value. The bike belonged to her mother who died of breast cancer last September.

So if you have such a rim languishing in your parts bin let me know what you want for it. If nothing turns up cheaper or a better match for the original, I know that we can get a 27" rim from Harris Cyclery.

You can get a new 36-hole 27" rim from Nashbar for quite cheap (often $10 on sale). That'll make wheel building/truing a much easier task.

I have a spare 27x1 1/4 Araya rim as well. It is marked 'Araya 27x1 1/4 w/o Japan'. It's 36 hole and has the sort of raised center shape. It's in good shape but has a few, small nicks, mostly from bouncing around my basement. It's currently connected to a Shimano UG 6-speed hub. I didn't put it in my stand but it looks very true just spinning it in my hands. You can have all or any of it for shipping costs from CO.

I sent an email directly to you. If this one doesn't work out I will order a rim from Nashbar.

Thanks go out to all who responded.

I've ordered the Nashbar rim and gave it away. If you look at the picture, they are very wide.
I think they need a 37 mm tire. I was a little new to the idea of building wheels, so I may have
misjudged. Others may have different experience, but I don't think the web page copy about it working
for 1 1/8 inch is correct.

EDIT: From the detailed description " use ---------------- Road Touring, Commuting 27" weight ------------- 598g holes -------------- 36 holes material ----------- Aluminum finish ------------- Silver satin anodized braking surface ---- Standard smooth (not machined) ERD ---------------- 619mm color -------------- Silver width -------------- 25mm eyelets ------------ No drilling ---------- Schrader bead -------------- Clincher www.nashbar.com made in Taiwan 062304jm"

Width 25 mm. The 27 inch Weinmann from Amazon for a similar price are 15 mm, 24mm exterior. The above doesn't say
if the 25mm is interior or exterior, but I would say (from having a pair) that it is interior.

I have two Araya 27 X 1 & 1/4 rims both straight 36 holes. nice and clean as well. Took them off my wife's Shogun to convert it to 700C. These rims will take 27 X 1 1/8 tires because that 's what she had on it for 20 years!

$5 each plus actuual shipping costs to your location. PM if intresested.

I have a pair of the Nashbar rims on a bike right now with 1 1/8 Pasela tires and they fit fine. They are 27mm on the outside. Nashbar also had Sun rims for about the same price, and they are a few mm narrower, 23mm on the outside.
