Colnago ID Help Please
My first Vintage Lightweight!!! After much searching here on BF and other sites I think I have narrowed this bike down to a 1975 or 1976 Colnago Super.
Second owner confirms a repaint by original owner, but insists the bike was built ORIGINALLY with the Superbe Pro Groupo
OK Here is what I know.
CLub on lower lug of headtube
Colnago stamped on Seatstay Tubes
Pointy Club cutout on BB Housing
Chromed chainstay
Cable guides above BB
1.5 inch overall length of dropouts
Colnago - not script and C090 stamped in Dropouts
Front Fork
Club and Colnago on crown
Clubs inside on Fork Tangs
Fully Chromed
Components
Full Superbe Pro Groupo fd rd bb crank indexed 7 speed shifters
Campy Headset
TTT Stem and Bars
Diacompe aero Brake Levers
Look Pedals
Turbo Saddle
Any thoughts you Colnago Experts???

It's definitely later than 1975-76, and probably post-1980, like 1980 or 81. If by "Colnago" stamped on seatstay tubes you mean the fluted seatstay caps. Those stampings and the "Colnago" branded dropouts together strongly suggest early 1980's. The over-the-bottom bracket cable guide means not far into the 80's. So I'd say 1980 or 81 is probably about right. You didn't tell us or show us whether it has the two top tube cable braze-ons - I'm assuming it does.

The only difference is that mine has a flat based club cutout on the BB shell. (as opposed to the "pointy" cutout on the one above) Is that earlier or later?
I do have the 2 top tube cable guides.
Thanks again, Dr. D

What about the front fork items... other posters on previous ID threads suggested that the club and Colnago in the crown and the crowns inside on the fork tangs was more indicative of the mid to late 70's ??

OK here is a pic of the seat tube stays with the colnago stamping and the cable mounting bosses for the rear brake.

The fork crown with Colnago+club and clubs in the fork tangs were indicative of Supers from about 1976 all the way until about 1983-84, when the full-sloping crown took over. In this case, the "Colnago" dropouts and "Colnago" seatstay caps place the bike in the latter end of that time period, though the over-the-BB cable guide says to me 1980 or '81 rather than '82, by which time I think the under-the-BB routing was standard and the "Colnago" stamped chainstays came in. There's nothing about the fork that says mid-to-late 70's per se. I had an '82 with that same fork.

BTW, if the bike was built originally with Superbe Pro that tells you something right there, since the original Superbe (non-Pro) group came out in 1977 and Superbe Pro not until several years later.

There was a lot of variation in Colnago chrome/paint during this time period, depending on buyer preference. Some of the frames in those pics have the white panel decals, some don't. I tend to think of the white panels with the metallic finishes. But I'm not sure there's a "correct" answer.
