Which BROOKS would be best...?

We have a '69 Schwinn Deluxe Twinn - brown like in the catalog... We've not much concern for weight and have added a train of brass bells, d-cell powered xmas lights, a rear skirt, a golden cherub 'hood' ornament inner-tubed to a chrome generator bullet light, bells and the like... (how can you care about weight when the bike weighs as much as the stoker...)

Recently I put an old Brooks b-17 on my '72 Suburban (also brown) and wondered why I waited so long... Also recently, I rode a friends 50's/60's fat tire with a b-33 on it.

Now I am thinking of replacing the pleather Schwinn pains in the butt saddles with Brooks b-135s.

We've been known to do 30 miles on the Twinn Deluxe - and have sore butts on occasion doing less than 30. The bike sometimes serve as a designated rider mobile when we need to taxi intoxicated friends to nearby homes etc... I weigh in between 190 - 210 depending on the season and she 's less than 135... I like the idea of all that travel on the b-135, but does anyone think it's excessive?

I should also mention - we've klunkered down hills on occasion at speeds too much for the drum and front brake... At night... with trees... and beer... and once in the snow! and once with groceries in a burley trailer! and once in mud with pouring rain (okay, more than once)! That warrants two b-135s right? Or should we get a b-33 and b-135, or even less?

Thanks in advance...

If it is a matter of economics and comfort the standard b17 will do just fine. Any brooks is better than no brooks. You will be happy any way you choose.

Our Twinn is as upright as it gets, the original saddles are sprung and I think we want the sprung brooks - So it is a matter of how much spring is too much...

Can you have too much spring in the saddle with this type of bike and riding(?), etc...

My tandem is a '79 Twinn Sport running a Belt (close to a B-17) saddle for me the captain, and an old B-72 for my wife or daughter stoker. They are very comfortable.

If I had a tandem, I'd get a B18 Lady for her and a B17 Flyer for me.

I am partial to the Pro and the Team Pro, but I hate to advise anyone regarding which Brooks model to buy, since it is a matter of personal anatomy and riding style.

The Brooks Pro was not designed for riding in an upright position. It's for riding "racer style" with the seat higher than the bars. It's definitely not the right saddle for a Schwinn Deluxe Twinn.

That's the 'Flyer', the B.67 is much wider than the B.17.

I love my B-17. It's been on a couple of different road bikes and my X0-3 hybrid. I would say they're pretty good for semi upright riding, at least for me. Once I laced it though, it became much more comfortable. I had a tendency to slide forward on it, and with it tilted nose up, that quickly became painful. Laced, it's a completely different saddle. It's all personal taste and body position, no one can really decide for you. But, if you spend all the time upright, I would get the next widest up from the B-17.,,,,BD

You know they should have sit testers at Brooks dealers, hehe.

My brother has a B66 on his Shogun, which sits very upright, and I have found it to be very comfortable in that seating position.

And the chrome springs look great with antique brown leather!

I'm interested that Barth-Karl and Pastorbob have shown up on the same thread. Who's next- Niebuhr-Tillich?

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I'm running a Serfas gel seat on my SS. What difference would I notice if I switched to a Brooks?

no offense but the title "pastorbob" doesn't ring in the same tone as "Reinhold-Paul"-

Pastorbob - are you an existentialist, pacifist, neorthodox, socialist with a brooks saddle and a schwinn addiction?

And about our Brooks choice - it looks like one b 135 and either a b 33 - or b 67...

Thanks for all the comments!!!!

Knox-John?

What difference? Rick! Let's see, what your doing now is akin to showing up for a very traditional service while wearing a Hawaiian shirt instead of a pulpit robe. Or to switch it around, as if you are preaching in a contemporary service and you're wearing a full Geneva gown with clerical collar, preaching tabs, and academic hood. It just doesn't work!

We've got to put a Brooks on that Super Sport baby of yours. I believe all your C&V buddies need to start an all points search for a Brook B-17 or Professional and bring your SS back into Schwinn compliance!

Let me just describe myself as a humble non-theologian cycle restorer, who dabbles in sermons once a week.

Your point is well taken, Bob However, I had to find something in a hurry in order to ride. The bike had a Schwinn-approved vinyl seat that had seen better days when it came to me. I presume I came with a Brooks originally, but I haven't a clue how it got switched for the lesser Schwinn-Approved seat.

Where would a fella go about finding one of those?

Boy! I was worried there for a second! I thought you might lay Wesley-John on me and tell me you are now riding a Robin Hood!

Back, somewhat to the original topic, Brooks Saddles, watch ebay for mid week closings. Don't be afraid to bid on used ones if they look OK, in fact, a nicely broken in Brooks is a real pleasure to pick up for under $50. I know some riders don't care for Brooks, but I find them to be so comfortable and gel to be so uncomfortable.

At least no one has thrown out Aquinas-Thomas yet. That happened last week and we all went into a tizzy.
