simplex derailer broke
 

the only thing on bikes i don't work on are the derailers,not because i'm not mechanically inclined,just because i raced bmx when i was much younger and never learned how to adjust drerailers by the time i started to ride bikes that were equipted with them. any way to get to the point my fathers early '70s model px-10 that is in excellant shape needed the front simplex derailer adjusted-i brought it to the local bike shop and $27.00 later got it back,i test rode it and the chain came off the front sprocket, i returned it to them and he again adjusted it while i waited,took it home it again threw the chain off. i brought it back left my phone number with them and 6 days later after not hearing from them i go by to see if its ready. the young man tells me the old derailer broke so they installed a new one. i checked the bike and it had some new scratches in the frame and a cheap derailer that he rounted the cable under the bottombracket with :mad:.. afetr they removed their derailer i brought it home and now im in search of the collar piece that hold the derailer on the tube as mine is broke on the very end,it is hard to see in the pictures.anyone have one of these?the circled part is broke in the pix

You need a new front dérailleur. Find a nice Suntour, install it, and be happy. It'll work better than the old Simplex, too.

Then you need another Simplex RD to replace the broken one. Best bet would be someone on this forum that might have one, or eBay.

That wasn't the original derailer anyway.

I'd replace it with another Simplex. They're made to fit a 28mm French seat tube. Some others will slip. I believe that the correct one for that bike is a Super Competition. I may have the original from my PX10. If I do, and it's still functional you can have it if you want it.

I just went out to the shop and dug it out. The plastic is cracked. You don't want it. There was a NOS one on eBay last week. I rarely see them.

thats what i have been told and i keep telling yall that this is the one my father bought the bike with,anyway its a not the point now that its broken so i guess ill be searching for the Super Competition-thanks

what do you guys think i should do-go back with the simplex 102 or find a Super Competition or a super L J ? i think i can wait it out to find the right one,i would like to get this bike back to original

If you're not riding it and you don't mind waiting, I'd search eBay and elsewhere for the original. If it were me personally, I'd buy the 102, ride it, and continue to search for the original part, then sell the 102 on eBay when I found a Super Competition or a Super L J . But that might cost a bit more.

This is your big chance to convert to a 1950s Simplex Competition "suicide" shifter. :)

Seriously, because your frame has old school over-the-bottom bracket gear cable routing, you have two options (been there ... done that):
1) find another front derailleur with an integral cable stop and continue to route the cable as before;
2) use a more modern front derailleur, sans cable stop, and route the cable housing under the bottom bracket, which is what I suspect your shop did.

yes thats exactly what they did without calling me first,i had told the guy in the shop a couple of weeks ago how i was very particular with this bike and wanted it original as possible. i guess he doesnt have a good memory,i had them remove the new stuff and left them with a stern lecture on contacting customers before performing work
