Sun rims are much sturdier, well worth the $235.

Weinmann wheelset is fine and unbeatable for $150.

Which 27" wheelset?
I've converted a 1982 Fuji to a singlespeed. After a wipeout, the wheels are a little wobbly, so it's time to upgrade. These are my choices:
• 27 inch Sun CR-18 Rim, Formula Sealed Cartridge Fixed/Free Hub, 32 or 36 Stainless Spokes $119.95; matching Front wheel: 27 inch Sun CR-18 Rim, Formula Sealed Cartridge Front Hub, 32 Stainless Spokes $114.95. The Sun CR-18 is a sturdy double-wall rim with eyelets, 22.5 mm wide (18.5 mm interior width.)
• 27 inch Weinmann RM19 Rim, Formula Sealed Cartridge Fixed/FreeHub, 32 Stainless Spokes $74.95; Matching Front wheel: 27 inch RM19 Rim, Formula Sealed Cartridge Hub, 32 Stainless Spokes $74.95.
The Weinmann RM19 is a single-wall rim with no eyelets, 25 mm wide (19 mm interior width.)
Both wheelsets feature a fixed/free Formula sealed bearing hub.
Thanks.

These prices are why I build my own wheels.
If you're heavy and/or you ride over really rough pavement, 36 spokes are better than 32. The double wall can make a difference in durability also. If I were riding around New York City, I'd prefer bulletproof, so I'd lean towards the Sun rims if I knew I'd be punishing them.

Are those rims any good?
I bought those rims, too, but I'm no wheelbuilder. After buying hubs and spokes, and paying $40 to the mechanic for the building, I think I'm reaching $200 anyway....

The rims appear just fine. I already had a box of 286mm spokes from an ebay lowball bid and reused the hubs I had. Ended up that the 286mm spokes worked 1X on the front and 2X on the rear, so my final all in (including the "free" labor ) cost was ~ $40

It is much easier to build wheels than most folks seem to think.

Yeah, really?
I'm happy to try it, but, you know, when I taught myself to hang sheetrock, the worst that could happen was my study had angles that weren't square. In this case, "catastrophic wheel failure" gives me pause.

John, wheel building for you is probably on a par with funerals for me. I don't think it would be fair to assure you that "anybody can do one!"

You think $115 for a pair of wheels on Formula hubs is expensive?
Anyway, to the OP, go with the Formula/Sun CR 18's. I've used these for a bunch of bikes and they are very nice for the price. The rims are a polished traditional look as well.

wheel building is not easy. But with the right type of lubrication it can be an enjoyable weekend. Of course you need to get a decent truing stand.

Well . . . that's quite a coincidence. Sun CR18's now $194! Sold!
Next question: 36-spoke w/polished rim, or 32-spoke w/satin rim?
I'm 6'2" at about 195.

I just purchased these. $60 for the pair. The rims are nice and light. The hubs may be cheapos but they work well and are smooth. I have been riding for a week on them and they work for me.

You need 36 spokes anyway, so stock up on polish.
