Trek ID Help, Please...What year?

I was just passing through my local CL today, and found this:
http://http://www.kodakgallery.com/Slideshow.jsp?Uc=d66xo99.8wchg4k1&Uy=6t2oxz&Upost_signin=Slideshow.jsp%3Fmode%3Dfromshare&Ux=0&mode= fromshare&conn_speed=1
The ad calls it a 2001. I suspect it's a tad bit older, but I'm no expert. One or more of you is, so I'll check back later for the answer. Not much to go on here, either, but I'm not out to buy it, just curious. TIA

That's 1983 or earlier. Probably not too much earlier. Bike's nothing special, but it's an interesting size.

They're asking $50, which seems reasonable, but it's listed as a 2001. Someone responded with a "More like 1971, dude!" ad, but that sounded way off too. Was Trek even in business in '71?

Trek Bicycle Corporation was started in 1976.

after '79 -- the decals were simplier then. melville says before '83 so that gives you a pretty small window.

I can't see the tubing decal well enough to see what it is but I can say for sure its not 531 or SL. I'm guessing it was the bottom of the line road bike in their lineup when it was new.

have you looked at vintage-trek.com?

certainly worth $50 though, its a hand silver brazed lugged frame, made by hippie craftsman in a barn in wisconsin

If the decal is original, it's either an '82 or '83. Looks like an '83 400 with Tange Mangalloy, which was their entry level offering: http://www.vintage-trek.com/TrekBrochure1983Part1.htm

More than you ever wanted to know about vintage Treks: http://www.vintage-trek.com/

I hear that. I'd be all over it, except for all of the reasons I can't (no money, no time, garage full of bikes, the usual yadda yadda). Oh well. Thanks for the help, everyone.
