    No, Marty - you're ok. Even I find this one offensive. And yes, it is mostly the wheels - and the seat post - and the crank. They just hurt to look at.

    No it's just those aluminum rims, that bike clearly needs some Zipp 404's

    but I've got to admit this one just makes me feel sad, I think it's the wheels.
    Dunno if sad is quite the right word. Sympathy is more like it; that frameset looks embarrased, like a fine hunting dog forced to wear a tutu.

    I don't mind the mtb pedals, neo/retro's like this tend to favor touring type activities. I have 'em on my neo/retro too!

    What rims are those on the Pinny? I can see the Mavic sticker and they look like box shaped rims but they're not Open Pros, are they?

    Yes, but the freehub and cassette are easy. The hard part is the brifters. You'll have to get Dura-Ace 8-speed STI brifters. They have a different cable pull length than all the later indexed Dura-Ace, 600, Ultegra and 105 brifters and rear derailleurs. A normal Shimano 8-speed cassette and 8- 9- or 10-speed freehub will work with the 7400 STI setup.

    This is the setup I have on my commuter, though I also have 7400 hubs. But I use a normal HG-70 8-speed cassette which you can buy anywhere for cheap. No need to go high-end and get very expensive and out of production Dura-Ace 7400 cassettes.

    I'm glad I found this thread. I just bought a 90-91 Tommasini Super Prestige that I'm planning on putting modern components on. This thread gives me a lot of inspiration...

    I do have a question, though. My bike has 126 mm rear dropout spacing, but obviously new rear wheels are 130 mm. I'm assuming since we're only talking about 2 mm on each side, that it won't hurt anything to put a wider wheel on, but I wanted to ask just in case. It's Columbus SLX tubing, by the way...

    Some people may tell you to cold set the rear to 130 and some will say just to squeeze the bigger hub in. I've done both with no issues.

    I've squeezed the hub in on my Ciocc and had no problems at all. I plan on doing it with my Razesa when it gets back from the painters.

    I shall soon be joining this crowd.. frame I will be using is slightly newer however, but still a classic in my eyes, a '91 trek 2100, one of those bonded aluminum/carbon wonders.. won it on ebay the other day, a hurtful wait for it to arrive in the mail.. and it will hurt even more waiting for spring to come to actually ride it, but on the flip side something to get excited about too.. the beast shall really awake inside.



    Also, does anyone know what the spoke lacing pattern is known as on the white pinnerello above with the gipiemme wheels? I really like that.

    Lately I have been toying with the idea of putting a new group on my 1991 Serotta Colorado II which I purchased new. It is currently at 22 lbs. with a somewhat heavy wheels and DA STI group fom the early 90's.

    I would like to get it down to approx 18#. I already have a spare set of Mavic Reflex hoops to use for the build.

    Does anyone have any recommnedations? I am considering going with Campy this time. I have always been a Campy fan but went with the DA 16 years ago b/c the Campy version of STI in the early 90's worked poorly.

    Of course it would be much easier and cheaper for me just to upgrade the rims/spokes and lose 3-4 lbs off me.

    What do you guys and gals think?
