Here is my first venture into the modern parts/ old frame bikes. My PH 501 with 9 speed Ultegra. I still have to hog out the fork and brake bridge for the modern brakes.

After riding this in modern garb, I don't think I'll be changing it back for quite awhile.
Sharp ride. What about just buying the nutted tektros?

Thought about it, but I'm one to use parts that I already have(read - I'm cheap). I have Some good tricolor dual pivot brakes, and a drill bit. I probably shouldn't take a drill to the frame, but It's my choice.

If the bike was something rare/high end, I would leave it alone...

It always makes me so sad when I see a '93 or '94 RB-1 with an aftermarket fork.

Me too, especially when you find out that the previous owner thought that it would ride better with a CARBON fork and lost the original ! I had this one in my parts box it's off an old Italian bike and has Gipiemme drops. I'm always on the hunt for a 57cm bi-plane.

Ugh. That's so disappointing. I don't know how anyone can pull that fork off, look at it, and not think it's something special and worth keeping in a safe place even if they think a carbon fork will be better.

1989 Panasonic DX-2000 upgrade

This is my recently upgraded 1989 Panasonic DX-2000.

Before, with non-original 27x 1&1/4" Arayas, 6 speed freewheel, cheap uncomfortable saddle, steel handlebars, everything else was original.

And after, a mix of new Tiagra 4500 hubs, brifters, rear derailleur , SRAM 12-26 cassette & chain, Nitto 115 classic 45cm bars, vintage 105 fr derailleur , and Dura Ace (53/39) crank. Also hand built CXP-33s with DB Wheelsmith spokes, 36H 3 cross. I have since changed out the Shimano Exage Country brakes for Tektro 539's (nutted). Brooks Swift Titanium saddle.

Wow, that's beautiful!

I've posted my Pinarello in this thread at least once already but I've put a different stem on it (3TTT with a hinged faceplate) and handlebars (Deda with a more "brifter friendly" shape) since I posted it last. The frame/fork are from the late '90's (probably near the very end of the run for lugged steel Pinarellos), it's equipped with '09 Campy Centaur, Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels, Miche seatpost, San Marco Rolls saddle.

I'm loving the new stem/handlebars with the brifters, the ergonomics are much better, I have to say, than with the Cinelli 64 handlebars I had on it before.

Thanks to Grand Bois for advising me on getting rid of the grey anodized finish on the new stem/bars and going with polished, shiny aluminum.

There is some thing horribly wrong with this Sachs. It's . . . <gasp> . . . green, not red!

Not that there's anything wrong with that . . . .
