@vstkrc What threadless stem, adaptor and handlebars did you use? Once again, NICE!

Hello C&V, long time lurker here. This forum has been a great source of information and inspiration, particularly this thread.

I've been riding and working on older bikes for years, but finally decided it was time to build something a little more modern. I got my wife a cheap new bike to try to get her to go with me and she ended up loving it, but not the bike. She loves this one and feels a much stronger attachment to a bike that she picked all the parts out and helped build.

Mine is a 1986 Schwinn Peloton with a full 105 5800 groupset. The frame was made in Japan in partnership with Panasonic with Columbus SP/SL. This bike isn't very C&V looking, but I love the mix of the classic steel lines and modern components. I know this forum isn't the biggest fan of threadless stems but I think the VO tall stack stem looks appropriate here.
Pedal Room

Hers is a mid nineties Bianchi Reparto Corse Columbus TSX. Hers is much more traditionally styled, with new Campagnolo Veloce 10sp and a vintage Campy aero seatpost. From the catalogs I've found, it seems to be a 95 or 96, but does anyone know how I can nail down the exact year? Pedal Room

Wow that Peloton is perfect! Only thing I would of done is a Thomson stem to match the post but the VO looks nice also. My hat is off to you sir! Welcome to the forum!

@eerdverk I am about to start my first attempt at a retro roadie and I hope that mine can come close to being as nice as that Peloton. Well done! I have the 5800 full group also and will hopefully have some photos of the finished product soon.

Beautiful bikes! The Schwinn especially is stunning.

I don't think the forums hates threadless stems. Threadless is superior to threaded in almost all ways. Unfortunately, most stems look hideous on C&V frames with low-diameter tubing. The VO tall stack is the best looking off-the-shelf threadless stem IMHO. I hadn't seen it in black before. Looks even better!

Here's a more recent photo with the new threadless adapter. Ended up buying an Origin8 adapter. Initially I had a generic one from my bike shop. Stem is an FSA OS-150 120 mm and bars are FSA Energy New Ergo. Both cheap wins from eBay.

That bike wouldn't last 2 hours at a Performance store for $1500

It's been a while since I have been around here, and a while since I was riding regularly. Nothing like a new bike to make a person want to ride more. I hope this one is ok in the CV section... It's from the late 90s but it's steel with a 1in fork.

Fondriest X-Status
5800 groupset.
Vuelta Corsa Lite wheels with 25c Gatorskins
Cane Creek 40 threadless headset
Pro Vibe 7s bar and stem.
Control Tech post Sette Race Ti saddle.

After a couple of 'adjustment' rides

It'sa nice-a ride, eh

90s NOS lugged Oria tubing makes this a new experience. 9 speed triple for the old man legs. With the adjuster cranked-in the chainstay length is a hair over 41cm. Racy feel as is with 20mm tire on front.

Bet the ride will be even sharper with the lighter weight tubies. Nothing nicer than a new bike, so clean that shifts so smoothly. Thanks to Lascauxcaveman for facilitating this frameset.

New handlebars (Soma Highway One, coming from Nitto Noodle. I loved the tops, but the reach was too much, and they didn't play with the Campy shifters like I wanted), stem (120 mm Cinelli 1A, coming from 110 mm Nitto Dynamic). Tops are now 1 cm further out, while the hoods are 1 cm closer. First real ride tomorrow to see how it feels. Also, new saddle since I last posted here. Its a Fabric Scoop Shallow. So far so good. Thanks for looking.

Love the Schwinn. I need a few better pics of it. Is that a carbon fork that you put a Schwinn decal on?

Thanks, There are a few more pictures on Pedal Room, and I'm going to try and take it out this weekend for some better pictures. Yes, it's a generic Nashbar carbon 1" threadless with decals from velocals.

I've got the same (threaded version though) on my Schwinn 974. I like the idea of the Schwinn decals on the fork. Will have to look into it...

What did you do with the stem and adapter situation? I can't quite make it out in any of your pics.

Looks like a VO Tall Stack stem over a threadless steer tube.

@icepick_trotsky is correct. No adapter, but I did have to use a 1.125 to 1 shim. It's the best looking threadless stem I could find. I tried a Thomson but it looked clunky.
