Miyata 1000 -- I think I just scored
The guys at my LBS (which is really my NBS) have always been very helpful and friendly. Tonight, while buying parts, one of the mechanics said that he knew I liked old bikes and do I want one of the old steel touring bikes hanging on the ceiling in back. On the ceiling were two Miyata 1000's, both with Brooks saddles. Apparently, they had been brought in for service many months ago and not claimed. I picked the one that looked best and took it home. I then checked out this forum and the discussions about the 1000.
The bike is in very good shape with only minimal markings on the blue frame. The Brooks doesn't even look broken in. It has a "M" serial number. This will be my next project. I want to add barcon shifters and aero brake levers. Any advice as to which components to purchase would be very welcome.
Now, the story goes on. After reading about the Miyata 1000, I called my Sister. I remembered that she was the original owner of a very nice Miyata touring bike. It turns out that it is a 1979 Gran Touring.

Weird. I just bought a 1000 today as well. I had been putting together a 610, but I found the 1000 and I am shifting my focus.
I have a Brooks seat and some Silver barend shifters from Rivendell. I am also going to replace the derailleurs and put in wider bars. The Sakae bars are really narrow (and I am not).

Fantastic bikes.
A serial number starting with M would most likely be from around 1984.
Wait for T-Mar - he'll tell you all about it...

My Miyata 310 has a L prefix and I bought it in 1984, so yours must be 1985.

I have to admit that I considered going back to the store and attempting to talk the mechanic out of the other one, but figured that was bad karma. So, I called the mechanic (who had previously suggested he might want the other bike) and explained to him what he had and that he needed to take the bike. I'm sure he will.

Sixten size
As I said mine has a standover height of 35" and I need max 32". I dont think mine has a size listed and if they were sold as " or cm but generally a 21" or 56-58cm works for me. I kind of like a touring bike on the larger size but 35" is just to big for my 5' 10"s. Thought i had a deal with a goy who claimed his had the canti brakes but when I got there he didnt.
Thanks
Jim
P.S if this needs to move to some other forum please let me know as ettiquette is not even a word I can spell.

I had a 916 and that was way nice. Even my lowly 112 shows signs of quolity.

My husband's very large 1000 has flat bars and they've never seemed right. We bought it from a friend who bought it new, and had some of the old parts that he had changed out, but not the bars. (It has Phil Wood hubs--I don't think the 1000 came with those.)
What kind of bars did the 1000s have originally?
