Don't get me wrong, some 1st-gen Ergo's would look great too. For my tastes, STI's are just one of the very few aesthetic fails for Shimano. That and they're not Italian

1984 Univega Gran Rally - I bought a Specialized Hardrock off a guy and he said you want to see a road bike? There was no other bike in sight - so he opened his trunk and it was in pieces.. in sandwich baggies even! Got it for $40 and had to reassemble everything from parts. The derailers, brakes, everything had to be put back together...

Wow... That is amazing!

A pile of parts and pieces and slowly but surely, a beautiful bicycle is the end result! Well done!

Here is my newly refurbished and annoying RIGI. I sold the 175 SR cranks/BB, C-Rec RD and Delta brakes over the winter. I tried putting a newer Campagranola crank and a 7spd cassette wheelset but... I had trouble getting the Gian Robert FD to play well with the chainrings sitting so close to the frame. I also had issues with lots of chain rub on the inside of the 53 I guess because of the uber short stays.

Since no one wanted the SR crank and Phil BB from the Hetchins I tried putting it on. I am still having trouble with the FD and for now I took the wheels off the Ugly Betty with 5spd FW I was using with the Portacatena. It seemed to be working in the stand but I ended up windmilling trying to get the chain on the big ring, then could not get back to the little ring.

Frame was an ebay find. Decided to go a different direction than how most people build this frame up, no fenders, no wide tires, no Suntour, no triple or long cage. I've been piecing together an NR group, but a Nuovo Gran Sport rear will have to do till I have the cash. I have a Silca Impero I want to paint to match the lagoon blue panels but I need to find a matching paint, eventually want to replace the GB stem with a TTT Record, and need a suitable bottle cage.

Thank goodness you removed that ugly crank - I just can't abide the looks of those Hollowtech cranks (even though they are dead easy to install/remove). I hope you saved those SLR brake levers and vintage Look pedals for a late 80's project.

That's just beautiful. It's gorgeous. Did I tell you it was nice?

Some day I'd like to try my hand at painting. Someday!

Do you have your own blast booth, or did you farm that part out?

MOTOBECANE Jubilee Sport '83 - general restoration

Hi,

I know that if it's possible we should not remove old good paint from vintage bike, but this Motobecane color was so "controversial" that I decide to put new pearl paint and give a little fresh look

You've done it justice. It looks absolutely lovely. But i was panicking when I saw the awesome previous paint job pic. What do you mean controversial lol?

Controversial, because it looks bad in reality More pink then purple...

Now looks really nice but still have old spirit, all parts are original, I've changed just brake housing.

The rust was mostly surface rust on the prior paint job (that was not original either) - I wire brushed and sanded best I could - none of the rust (as bad as it looked) was down to the steel. I painted it rattle can believe it or not. 1 coat primer, 2 color and 3 clear...

I had that checker flag contact paper and I knew since I was going to be 'flipping' this bike (it is way too big for me) - I did not want to spend the $40 on the repro decals off eBay... next owner can do that if they want. But - I needed something there was so much real estate since the frame is large!
