80's Specialized Sequoia

Hello!

This is my first posting and I am a complete Newbie to cycling.

A lil Background... I have recently started riding my beach cruiser from Newport Beach to Laguna Beach Daily. This is approximately 13 miles. While that may not sound very far to some of you, get on a beach cruiser and try it! There are a couple of significant climbs/hills which I have finally been able to crest without walking the pig of a beach cruiser I have, I think the thing weighs about 40 lbs! I have started to really like riding my bike and have decided to take another step. buying my first road bike.

I have found a Specialized Sequoia for $325.00 with the following description:

"53cm lugged, powder coated, double butted chromoly frame and fork
Specialized stem and handlebars with new black cork grip tape
Dia Compe Royal Gran brake calipers (side pull) and levers
Specialized 30/46/50t crankset
Shimano 600 shifters and deraillers
Specialized seat/seatpost
Wheels are 700c with Araya rims and Shimano 105 quick release hubs"

I am 5'11" 240 lbs and dropping weight fast!

Can you please reply and let me know if the price if fair and if this would be a good starter bike for me ?

I'm dont know the Laguna Beach market. thats california , right? Are there any photos available? It reads like a nice bike. The triple up front is a plus for commuting. Do we know how many on the back? The price dosent sound to to high but not realy a deal either but I dont know the market there.

Those old Sequoias are what's called sports tourers, relaxed road bike geometry that would probably be very good for what you want. However, at at 5'11" that bike looks way too small for you. The price seems reasonable -- not a great deal, but not a ripoff either.

And the seller is wrong about those derailers: they're old Deore XT, not 600.

It sounds like it might be a bit too small for you, but the Sequioa was a nice bike! Too bad it's not closer to me
