Another Vintage Carlton

Hey Dbakl, this ones for you!

I picked this bike up as a trade for a '84 Raleigh Grand Prix I had gotten for free. It was in pretty bad shape when I got it, so over the last 2 months I've been upgrading and fixing what needed to be done. I have the original campy derailleurs it came with, but they're pretty busted up and I got the Sachs New Success stuff for a steal and it works well. The campy shifters had a lot of problems too and I replaced them with the Silver shifters from Rivendelle. They're quite nice. The wheels were rebuilt, too, as it came with some weinnman rims but the nipples had seized to the spokes and was quite out of true. I found some nos 27" MA2's in a corner of the shop I work at and snagged them. THe fenders are from velo orange. Ive built it up to be my commuter in the winter and with plans to do some light touring on it with a friend of mine this spring.

Anyway, enjoy, more pics on my flickr account: Full set

Ah, you're breaking my heart! Nice job! That's more like a Raleigh International than mine was, which matched my new Franco Suisse pretty closely. I don't think they originally came all chrome, but were transparent color over polished chrome that was stripped, as mine was. I love that fork bend, really sweet! I think you'll find it to be a good riding, all day, all comfort bike. I've had dozens of bikes since I lost that chrome Carlton, but I'd give them all up just to have it back!

Do you know what the original model was? I may have to add some fenders to mine...

I just took it on its first longer ride (35 miles) this morning and it indeed was quite comfortable. Still needs some tweaking, as im so used to riding track bikes around that I've got to adjust for the different riding position. The crank arms are also a bit longer than I would prefer but thats minor. I have no idea what the original model is, i did a little digging online but didn't find much.

If you get the velo orange fenders, i HIGHLY recommend buying a set of Honjo hardware with it, as its much better than the stock hardware. I ended up rigging my own hardware for the rear fender.
