School me on Peugeot model names

OK, actually a couple of different questions here.

UE, UO, PX, PY... I don't understand... 8, 10, 22, 40.... ??
Is there a decoder key for this?

Also, am I wrong in assuming that they were much like Schwinn & Raleigh in the 60's & 70's, in that even their lower end models were quite ridable? That is, solidly built, with useful geometries.

Thanks in advance.

We need a book on this

As long as it fits you, even a cheap Peugeot is a joy to ride.

UO... General service, 10 speed.
UE.... Semi randoneur version of the UO
AO..... Economy UO..less chrome.
AE.....Economy UE

PX, PY, race bikes.

WIth the pump pegs on the top tube, I'd say that was a Euro market machine imported by someone. Peugeot made slightly different bikes for the different target markets. That is pretty close to a U.S> Market UE-8, allthough it would have probably been called something else. US market bikes had the pegs on the downtube and no black on the lugs.

the UE/AE bikes are also called Caravans

Jim,
Did they ever market the PX-8 in the states or was it a Euro only model?

Yes...in agreement.

Inoxdable decal gives it an 'X' designation by default. Now, simply guessing, because its a loading 'touring' model Peugeot must have given the 'stainless treatment to help with corrosion.

Square headtube and seattube badges automaticly place it on the 70's. Last year for those was '76

'74 was the last year for that style downtube decal and it wasnt used before '70

Pictured is a 1972 PX8 (Sorry, I initialy had it as '73. 1972 100%)

Euro as far as I know. I've only seen it in Euro catalogs.

New Peugeot Websites

Greetings,
I will email Sheldon and ask him to link Jim's and my sites. Also, we need to figure out how to make these more visible to search engines.
Cheers,
Tom S.
