spotted: an ancient Le JEUNE
 

Took my son to one of the local private schools the other day for an event. While he was busy I wandered the halls and ran into this LE JEUNE.

It was stock down to the tires.

I took the liberty of rifling through the seat bag and found a Mafac tool kit in tact.

Asked a custodian about it and he took me down to a garage and showed me his Giant.

Asked the physics teacher about it and he took me to a room full of high mileage vehicles that the students had built.

I went back and stared at it for a couple more minutes.

I tend to leave the saddlebags on strangers bikes alone. People might get the wrong idea and assume I'm an opportunistic thief.

That bike is in pretty good shape. Brakes & levers are probably worth more than everything else combined.

That looks like a UO-8 clone -- nothing great, but a decent enough bike for transportation or recreation.

That "rifling" thing can cause a BIG problem where I'm from...As mom would always say, "look, don't touch".

In the vein of the simplest explanation being the most plausible, I'm betting that the "rifling" involved raising the flap and peeking. Given what I've seen Matthew post before, I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt, YMMV, of course.

I've got one of those converted to a fix and I bought an identical on on ebay for my former gf, she's got it rigged as a 5 speed cruiser in SF. Both of them came stock (I assume) with steel wheels and all.
Gotta love an orange bike.

a nice bike. someone should address that front brake, though. that would be a good way to introduce yourself to the owner, maybe...

This is my version of the orange Le Jeune. It's a really nice ride, and I often get compliments on it.

It may have been stock when I got it, but it wasn't really ready to ride. I changed out most of it, but kept the rear simplex derailleur, and it works fine as a ten-speed.

Hopefully people will not spend too much time riffling through my seat-bag, but they will not find what I once found in there: a birds nest! (the bag came off of an old japanese "Panther" bike)

The bicycle in the OP's pics is a boom era 5-F Deluxe Touring model. As John E stated, is was direct competition Peugeot's UO8.
