Hi
I have slipped the Ebay seller a message to find out the serial number and if possible the Ishiwata date along with any history of the bike. It does have a very early 80`s component look.
That makes 4 bikes/frames of the lugged type I have seen. Certainly not a group set of componentary. The black bike looks like another WAK serial numbered bike I have seen on another forum. Welded frame and BMX forks, much like the Schwinn 1983 advertisment
My search to authorize the serial number has been very slow with a few dead ends although one ex Schwinn employee did say the SN was Feb 1981. Trying to sort out the Ishiwata calendar used for there tubing, this bike numbers may help.
The rebuild is progressing slowly but I have all the components now. Having a decal (the only original one on the frame, a cromo type) copied and new a one made before the frame is off to have a spot of welding around the seat clamp lug done before being repainted. The Magura brake lever perches clamps are striped for powder coating and other components are ready for repolishing. I had a bit of confusion with looking for Magura Shorty levers, I had a left and right shorty but of different lengths, after much searching a found out they where never the same length originally, so I do have a pair. Moving house at present so time is short with packing etc.

Look what dropped in my lap this afternoon. I was at my friends house up in Conroe, and he's like lets go by Matt's. Matthew is this mutual friend, and bike shop owner in Porter, a few miles away. He has a bunch of oddball stuff there. Ladies bikes you've never heard of, an old Bottechia that weighs around 30 pounds(or more), old mountain bikes, mid school BMX, you name it! Well, my friend and I were walking along and THIS pops into view, SR touring cranks, mini dia compe canti's, Deerhead thumbies, Mountech derailleur, and th weirdest stem I have ever seen. Matt was asking $80(minus the gold araya wheels) so I looked around a little until it was close to leaving time. I said, I have $60, or a debit card. He took $60, and I took the bike. So, I guess I am in the club now, hehe. One thing I know for sure, it's not light. That's okay, I bought it for the rarity/novelty of it.,,,,BD

Excellent! It's interesting that yours, Crumbling's and the one from the auction above use the block letter Schwinn decal on the down tube, where mine was the feather script. What is the SN? What headset?

CS476244 is the S/N. I may have transposed the 2 and 6, on my way back in the house.,,,,BD
Mine has a bike shop sticker on it, so it might have been built prior to the sale.

Just noticed the headset question. It has a bottom with no branding, and the top half is a Tange Levin(The campy style chrome one). It also has a very early looking set of SPD/platform flip flop pedals. Those are probably newer than the bike I imagine, but way different construction style from the new ones out now.,,,,BD

It's also strange how these frames have dual bottle cage mounts? Road bikes were still in the one bottle phase at that point, and these have two, like a later 80's bike.,,,,BD

Bikedued,
That makes 5 of this lugged type. The SN number on your frame is consistent with mine and jjvw`s. As I have wanted from other frames is the steerer tube stamping, Ishiwata N.L, to see how that compares. This is not the head bearing set you think it is. With 3 of the 5 confirmed to have a similar LLNNNNNN and all appear to be within the production range of Schwinn in 1981 I am more certain they where made in 1981 February/April. If you can drop the steerer tube down and look at the stamping I would appreciate knowing, the same for jjvw frame. See the photos I loaded a while back. Is the SN stamped on the U/S of the bottom bracket.
My frame is finally off for painting, back to the original colour. I will post the photos of it soon.
You say about the weight, the forks are the heavy part, the fork crown. The frame is not too bad for the time. What is the name of the Bike Shop, can you post a photo of it. I have had a 4130 chrome-moly decal made for the bottom of the seat tube, plus a few spares.
jjvw, the down tube decal on mine is the same as yours, Schwinn feather as there is a faint outline of the feather decal. All this adds to the puzzle of what we have.

What headset bearing set is it then? I will try to drop the fork tonight. S/N is on the undersde of the BB.,,,,BD
Got too curious for my own good. The steerer reads Ishiwata 4-C.. It is also marked 833 in blue marker. No doubt the stem size .833?
The top headset pieces, are different from the lower. The top is clearly marked Tange Seiki Levin...
I also administered a tap test on the tubing. No change in tone from ends to middle indicates straight gauge 4130. That to me would make it feel heavy. For having no wheels and tires, it felt heavy to me. Not just because of the fork crown either.

The Ishiwata 4.C is what I am wanting to know. To me it indicates either 1984 and the month of April if the Tange dating system is used. That would put the frame manufacture well after 1984, probably 1985 to be made from this tubing. I am still going with the Ishiwata using the Japanese Imperial dating system as used by other Japanese bike part manufacturers. Tange uses the roman dating system eg 4.C for 1984 April. The Japanese system would date this as the 4th year of the decade, April. The 4th year of the decade decade would be equivalant to 1979 that fits within the manufacture year pre 1979. Refer to the Ishiwata catalogue as I noted back on Page 3 of the forum. Compare the sizing of the tubing on page 5 MTB tubing. The .833 does rfer to the diameter, BMX size. The steering stem nuts on my frame are Specialized. I also feel the fork crown is similar to 1983 faux biplane crown used on Trek 850 of 1983. From what tube sizing I have seen the Ishiwata and Tange are not the same size, maybe you may be able to compare these fork blades. I have read Trek did use Ishiwata tubing but I am not able to do a comparison to the 850. Check out the bike shop sticker to see if the bike shop is still open as they may have a very long memory,

A little progress. 2.1 tires fit well. I kept the SR Apex touring crank, and even found a replacement for the mismatched left side in my stash. Sorry your post just reminded me about the bike shop sticker. I will shoot a picture of it tomorrow, but it's one of those chrome looking ones with red graphics. It looks like it says The Cyclery Shop, or something to that effect, and lists three or four locations. Hard to read in the garage light after dark. I will probably touch up the paint, and get decals through velocals.,,,,BD

Yes it is the frame. That page is from the Schwinn catalogue is from 1983 BMX catalogue (see bake to page 2 of this Forum). I think this was an attempt to clear old stock. I have read references to 1981 for Schwinn to have supplied these frames from Japan.

After posting a question on the appraisal board about my Schwinn frame, I was directed here and
it was suggested by shelbyfv that I post up some info and photos here as an additional point of
reference. Mine was built up with Suntour Mountech and Diacompe bits, plus Specialized bull
moose bars, headset and hubs. SN is BS367578. It's been fun learning about this ....

Thanks for the additional number 7 on this type. Interesting the SN proceeds my frame by 250 approximately but will still fit in with February production. I presume the SN is on the underside of the BB. The Schwinn feather decal I presume is the original. I have used the same on my rebuild that is going slow this year as I have had cancer issues to deal with, but have just had clearance after the operation. It would be good to know the Ishiwata numbers on the steerer tube, just for more evidence to work with.

I'm almost positive that's a high sierra. Looks very similar to an 84 High Sierra I had in the past.

OP here. It isn't a High Sierra. That frame is an exact match to mine which predates the HS by at least a year.

I have seen another bike on Ebay
MEN'S Vintage 1983 Schwinn 1st Edition Collectable Mountain Bike 19 5 Inch Frame | eBay That makes 7 of these Schwinn frames and 2 with the BMX forks.
I have tried to contact the owner but he is not accepting messages. Interesting the seller is saying it is a from new not having been used and is 1983 but the Schwinn serial number is BS367845. Hopefully he has seen this page and will make contact. The components appear to be Suntour Mountech all available in 1983 and some earlier. History of the bike would of interest.

These lugged, Japanese Schwinn's are dead ringers for my 1983 Takara Highlander. My research revealed that Takara was an Oklahoma City bike company that imported Japanese built bikes for their brand. My serial number started with "CS" and a little research revealed some similar era Bianchi's with the same serial number format. I suspect there were a small number of shops building frames for numerous bike companies, just like today. It's possible The Schwinn's in this thread came out of the same factory as my old Takara. I miss that old bike and I want something very similar to replace it!

as I don't think it's worth what he is asking. Those BMX bars don't help. Finding bull moose bars in the 21.1 size might be a challenge. Serial number is approx 250 away from the one I posted above.

It depends on who you are. I have three sets I have no use for. Unless I find an old Ross, Schwinn, or Huffy needing a bullmoose, I am probably stuck with them.
Funny I was just thinking of making a BMX 26 inch cruiser out of mine. It is too small, and will wear you flat out on a ride longer than a few miles. No kidding, it was even early Spring, and it wiped me out. Maybe it was weight, maybe it was tire size. Maybe it was a combo of both. I rode it once, and never got back on it. I figured with slightly smaller tires, and no weight from components, I might be a little better off.,,,,BD

I have a lugged Schwinn Cimarron that is blue and exactly like jjvw frame. It has red Araya and track hubs, dated 83 if my memory serves me. The Cimarron decals are still on the frame, although they are vague. it has the same forks and I have not been able to find out what year. I will post photos whe I get the bike out of storage.
