The KHS John Howard build.....well, so far at least.

Well, I got the frame about a week and half ago, had some components come in about the same time. Since today is my Saturday, I put on all the stuff I have so far sans the fr. derailleur, as I need to get a 28.6 clamp as it is a braze-on model. Still have a bunch of stuff in my watch list on ebay, so I figure it'll be ready to get out on the road mid February...hopefully it'll be a bit warmer!! At first I thought 8 speed would be a good choice, but parts are sometimes hard to find, and they can get stupid expensive, so I decided to go with the "retro/modern" build. Nine speed, which there is still an abundance of, with DT shifters, and since I really like my ergo brifters, a pair of Tektro levers. Think I might keep the Araya rims as they look like they have about 10 miles on them. I'll just need to rebuild the rear with a compatible hub. Here is the first pic, and more to follow as the build gets finished. I'm stoked to get this bike out on the road!

Very nice. Love those "bare-necessity" head lugs! (I have a KHS mtb so I'm a fan. )

Sweet bike!

I have a pair of those Araya CTL-370's, light as heck. But also a bit thin-skinned. Built mine with 15G DT and Superbe Pro hubs. Not my first build, but once done, I noticed slight deformation around the eyelets. IMO, tension was not excessive. So be careful re-using them with a new hubset.

I don't think the pic is big enough to see the lines in the hard anodizing...

Is K-Rudd helping you from now on?

yeah, I think I will not be rebuilding them as it's just as cost effective to just buy a wheelset these days anyway. I used to have the same thing happen from time to time on some mavic rims and many of the older matrix rims I've built in the past, so I know exactly what your talking about with the small deflection. They are nice vintage rims though.

FamilyGuy...did I miss something...who is K-Rudd?

redtires, perhaps not. The spelling of tires should have been a giveaway here for me.

John Howard is the outgoing Prime Minister of Australia. When someone says they're on "The John Howard Surf Team", or in your case the "KHS John Howard build", it usually means they're on the dole (for US think welfare) payments, using money for surfing, riding, building bikes, etc.

Now Kevin Rudd is our new Prime Minister (suitably rocked to K-Rudd for the younger voter), I thought maybe he mght be helping out...money-wise.

Naturally, all this makes no bloody sense if you're not in Australia.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....lol. Nope, I'm in Colorado. The only person I really ever knew about who was at all involved in Australian politics was Peter Garrett, whom I don't know if he still is. I'm glad you also explained what being on "the dole" was as well. To me, as a corrections officer, that can mean your running from the law as a fugitive. But, if K-Rudd wants to put a little money into my bike, anonymously of course, he can leave some at the north end of the 5th street bridge, tonight at midnight in a red plastic bag

I aways thought that being a fugitive was called being on "the lamb"!?

On "the dole" was about money, as in doling it out. ie; Welfare: govenment money doled out to indigents.

'Course, da bomb used to be a threat, now it means cool!

YIMV!*

Yeah, Peter Garrett still in politics...he's Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts. Quite suitable given his Midnight Oil background.

Of course, 'da bomb' has its time and place. Sometimes if you hear someone say they're "gonna drop da bomb on you", you run.

7'+ Shaq as he pounds down the pine with the ball?
A 5'5" Iraqi with an oddly bulging raincoat?

Run.

Apologies for thread hijack - bike looks great by the way. What length is that stem? It looks quite long for a quill.
