Removing Rust
 

So I'm trying to restore my dad's old Scwhinn Varsity. It's got loads of rust on the frame though and I don't want to spend a lot of money. What's the best way to simply remove rust (assuming there is one) while keeping the original paint job? Will I have to give it a "molasses bath" as i saw an earlier post say? And if so, could you tell me how to do it?

If you've got rust, then the original paint is gone.

Using #60 mesh sand will clean it up quickly with one of these....

I use ZAP cleaner. It's made for rust removal on tile. Wear protection because it uses acid. I spray it on then wipe down with a wet towel after a few minutes. Oxalic acid is safer but takes awhile to work. Search the vintage forum for more hints. Good luck

I took on the project of restoring my older brothers rusty 1980 Schwinn Varsity and what I quickly found was I could buy him a much better vintage ride for about the same money I would be spending on the "Varsity rehab". Although he did have some sentimental attachment to the old Schwinn I think he be much more likely to ride and in the end much happier with a lighter and more comfortable machine.
