Nashbar Sport EX

Just wondering if anyone knows whether this was sold as a complete bike or frame and fork combo to build your own only.

Older frame, can't say for sure. Serial# DQ30901. Fully lugged frame, says "Infinity cr-mo tapered double butted Tange", seat stays wrap around and nearly touch at the seat stay cluster (which I think looks really nice). Chrome fork which is, unfortunately, in poor shape.

Full Shimano 600 (12 spd), which I believe is supposed to be pretty respectable. 700c wheels, mismatched but rear seems like it might be original (campy hub, rim is yet to be ID'd).

Out of my collection, which now needs to down size for sure, I think this one is going to suite my road bike part of the stable. Needs some work in the paint department, but I sure like how it rides. Figured I should maybe know a little about it if it's to be my keeper.

Did Nashbar just relabel frames or did they have them built to their spec?

sorry, it's still filthy, wanted to give it a quick ride before I spent too much time on it.

Oh, the shifters are 600 as well, but they are rusted pretty bad on the side. have to figure out something here too. Cost me about a gallon of gas to go get it...and I had to take a huffy MTB off their hands too. I thought that was fair lol.

Nice looking ride. Maybe it's just the angle, but those handlebars look huge to me. I dig that color. I know zero in answer to your query.

Shimano 600 was the precursor to Ultegra. It's solid stuff.

Lugs look good and it's got the chrome fork. I'd say it's a decent bike!

lol, the handlebars do look huge and I almost took another pic after seeing it full size. It is a weird angle, but it almost looks 3D.

Unfortunately, the chrome forks are in very bad shape. they look decent enough in the pic, but the insides are rusted more than I will accept. I am unsure how cross compatible forks are and if this one is beyond saving, but if everything comes together nicely, I will likely just get it all powdercoated as the top tube has some nasty gashes as well. scratches I can handle, but this one is in need of some tlc.

I still have much to learn, but I'd never seen the wrap around seat stays before, I like them. Just adds a nice touch.

The bonus is the guy had put new tires and a chain on it less than a year ago but never ended up doing the rest of the work.

In the 80s, Nashbar sold complete bikes under their own name. Before this period, they sold some framesets but didn't come with a Nashbar decal. After the 80s, they continued to offer complete bikes into the 90s, but also sold frames separately. But this wasn't one of them.
Their company name went from Bike Warehouse, to Bike Nashbar. Finally changing to Nashbar.com.
(probably when they got acquired by Performance Bike)

Try soaking the rusted parts in molasses. There's is thread here on the procedure.

There's a member here called T-Mar who is the great guru of Japanese frames from the '80's ... hopefully he'll drop in and tell us what he knows, because I'll bet he has an answer for you. That said, you can date the component group using the Shimano date codes, and that will help. If I squint hard enough , I think I see the special "starfish" nut which Shimano used on its 600 and Dura Ace headsets for a while, and that dates the headset at least to early- or mid-'80's (I think they knocked that off in '85 or so). FYI, if the rest of the bike is 600, that Campy hub probably isn't original.

All that said, 600 is really good stuff - I've got it, complete or in parts, on three bikes - and its presence indicates good quality. I don't think that fork is beyond salvage, but it may have to be rechromed, or completely stripped and then painted or powdercoated.

Good snag, except for that Huffy ...

That definitely looks like one of the complete bikes that Nashbar sold. I think they were about $600 in 1985.

I remember being at a bike shop when a guy came in with one and I thought the shop was going to give him a hard time for buying a mail order bike; but they were all very interested in it. Then I found out the guy was an employee at the shop!

Dittos to the Oxalic Acid suggestion. While there may be some pitting and unevenness in the surface, they will shine and it will give you time to find a suitable replacement if necessary.

Hmm, if the acid or molasses makes a nice enough difference, I might just keep the paint thing as is. Put the powdercoat money towards some good wheels. I am not too worried about it looking a little junky, all the better for being less nervous about leaving it alone, but I do have a limit. I also may change my mind 10 more times and still not be sure.

Going to do cables, pads, grease and maybe new rings and cassette this weekend. Should be a good ride for a modest investment. Thanks to all.

Still curious about the wrap around stays. I've seen a few pic, but none that look like these.

Why do you want a new cassette and chainrings? They're probably just fine...

If you can't go the oxalic acid/molasses route, try taking some steel wool (some suggest brass wool, but steel wool worked fine for me) and turtle wax chrome polish and polish the rust right off. Don't push it in too deep or you'll scratch the chrome up but it should come out really well. A peugeot I had was like that and it cleaned up well.

What do you mean by wrap around stays? Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see anything out of the range of ordinary.

One cog on the cassette is looking pretty worn, but I'm going to have my buddy give them a closer look after I clean it up a little. I figured if I change it I should do the chain rings too.

I ride a 1990 Nashbar bike with an 7 speedindex downtube Suntour group,Ishiwata frame.
Around Ohio in the 80,s a lot of quality bikes were only mail order.
Still sucks what happened to Suntour in the early 90,s.

I have a late 80's Nashbar 4050 road bike that I road quite a bit last year (and will ride again once I get around to fixing it) until it got a bit damaged in an accident. It is a nice riding bike, cromoly frame (straight gauge), Tange headset and Suntour 4050 Accushift (hence the bikes model name)with down tube shifters. If the paint were in better shape I would fix it and sell it, but it looks just ratty enough that it wouldn't bring good money.
