It's over in an instant!
That one moment you wish you could somehow call a Mulligan.
If ONLY you could go back and do it differently the second time.
Yeah, if ONLY!!
The reality? It's a nightmare!
Last Friday....
I had just finished spraying a couple of coats of clear over the pinstripes & box lining I had just spent 2 days aligning, masking, mixing, airbrushing, unmasking, remasking, airbrushing and unmasking.
Everything was going well and looking sweeeet!
So I cleaned the gun, the mixing bench & the shop. I Packed up all the stuff for the weekend. I was ready to head out. Except the frame was still on the stand in the middle of the floor. (I borrow a friends shop, so I leave it like I found it each day) I move the frame to the side rack so I can put the painting stand away. I turn to get the painting stand. I take one step. Half way to the second step, I hear it...
KaBong! KaBing! KaBang! .. I've caught it!
Yeah greAT! On the THIRD bounce!
I hung it on a SOLID peg & left.
Apparently, the pipe-fitting rack had a loose peg, so when I hung the frame on it, it unscrewed (slowly) & dropped the frame.
I know there are some dings, but I'll have do a complete inspection when I can stand to even look at it.
It IS candy red, so it's impossible to "just" touch it up.
Friday also found the batteries in my camera leaking & corroded, so pictures will be posted when I get that fixed.
But today?....Today was wonderful! I spent the whole day with the kids.
Didn't think about bikes until I sat down just now, ... & started this thread.
So if anyones says painting bikes is easy, ...they haven't done it long enough!
Keep the rubber side down & ride on the edge of traction!
Cheers,
Dr. D

Did that on a friends motorcycle tank I painted a few years ago, had it hanging from a coat hanger in the garage,I called him the next day to pick it up and when we went to out to get it we found it laying on the floor, three days later he got his tank back.Note to self no more using coat hangers!! Tank was a easy to fix compared to what your bike frame will take.

The good news is, it happened to you instead of me. And what I mean by that is, if it happened to me I wouldn't even know where to begin fixing the damage, so it would be a bigger loss in general.

Yeah, I was thinking I should title this one "Black Betty".
The old song went something like...
Whoa oh oh oh, black betty
Bam a lam...
Which is what it sounded like. Bam A Lam!
Now I'm getting off BF's, & getting on the road to go assess the tragedy.
Film at 11.

Easy, if it's a repaint of an old frame tell the owner that it's built in
Patina (that is if it's only paint damage), and think of the anguish that you've
saved him over getting that first ding in the paint!
(well it was worth a try).
Hope it turns out better than you expect.

If it were me, and it was my bike, I would shrug it off.
If it were me, and it was someone else's frame, I would be pulling my hair out.
Especially with as sweet as your paint jobs usually look (from the pics I have seen), and knowing the work you put into them, this is potentially a big problem.
Warm comforting thoughts heading your way!

Awwww damn! I feel for you, dude. Know that feeling.
We're human, we've all done something similar.
My story...I've always preached the importance of keeping drinks far away from laptops.
I disassembled my girlfriend's laptop to repair a loosened power jack. It took many hours to decrypt the assemblage. Resoldered the jack, vacuumed the interior, cleaned the cable contacts, replaced the heatsink compound. By the time I was done, and she shows up all happy, and me so proud...I was demo-ing it. And of course...knocked a tall glass of water onto it. First time in my life!!!
Pop, pop, shizzzle snap, flash, poof!
:-P
Next day I went laptop shopping.

And I thought I had problems.
A day with the kids sounds like a good way to put thing back into perspective.

I'm sure it's not as bad as Dr. D thinks .
What's worse, actually, is that I know how much time and effort has gone into the bike so far--it's actually probably much harder on Dr. D than it is on me...so I am hoping for his sake that it is actually minor, and repairable, damage.

Sort of...
once I take them, I have to download them to the desktop computer, size & save at 100k or less, burn them to a CD, put that CD in THIS computer, then post them to a reply that I have to pick&peck.
Is it 11 yet?
ACtually.....the candy red is NOT Margarets, it's........
and the damage isn't quite as bad as I had thought. Thanks to having taken the weekend to regain composuer.
The brunt of the impact was to the left rear drop out. Nicks on the BB shell, the seat tube top, the headtube edge and, of course, one small one, right smack dab in the top center of the top tube!
So I will consult my auto paint guru, and determine the best course of action.
Thanks for all your kind thoughts & words of encouragement, it's definately appreciated!
