Pinarello Gavia (Modern-Retro Build)

Hello to all here, this is my first thread here in Classic & Vintage.

For quite some time I've been hunting for a vintage italian steel ride, and I've always been disappointed time and time again as italian framesets/bikes are very rare in my country (I live in Singapore).

So one day I spotted a second-hand Pinarello Gavia lying forlornly in a dusty corner of one of my LBS. The Gavia appeared to be in good condition all round, save for the peeling decals on the seat tube.

I was saddened by the fact that the previous owner had kind of neglected such a nice ride like this. A part of me felt that the bike needed a new owner and a home, and the LBS owner had told me that the Gavia had been inside his shop for a very long time. Here are some pics of the frameset with some new components on it, namely Nitto noodle bars and a Nitto Pearl quill stem.

I am swapping my 07 Centaur and Fulcrum Racing 7s from my Soul Genesis over to the Gavia. Heres a pic of my Genesis.

This is my first italian bike build and I am pretty stoked about it. However I know little about the Gavia except that it was a rung below the Montello (feel free to correct me if Im wrong), and I appreciate if anyone here is able to share more information about the Gavia. Im sorry I couldnt provide any pics of serial numbers or the bottom bracket, but once the build is finished I'll post pics of them. Stay tuned to this thread!

Welcome to C&V! Nice catch! All the Pinarello's that I have seen have been real treasures. Make sure you post pics when you're done.

Hey, nice gavia,

I recently acquired one also, circa 93 I think. Mine is red, and the finish is also a little worse for wear, specifically the decals. I would love to know more about the frame as well. Do you have any idea of the year? The frame is a bit different than mine, specifically the fork crown, rear triangle chroming and a couple of the pantographs. What was the build? will keep an eye on this thread...

beautiful. welcome to the peeling pinarello sticker club. Save 'em if you can, as originals from yellow jersey are going for $100/sheet. It might be a good idea, if you are equipped to do it, to spray them with a little clearcoat. Yours looks to be an early '90's vintage.

so what do you think compared to the Soul?

Yeah, Pinarello decals are famous for their peeling. I think it's an Italian thing.

eBay has cyclomundo who will sell you a set of Pinarello decals.

Nice!
But sadly it remembers me that I let go a Gavia frame and fork at $250 - I wasn't sure about it due to the peeling decals and bad paint, and then it was sold already.

I not equipped to do any restoration, sad to say. However I plan to ride this baby for a while first, then Im going to send it for respraying and a new set of decals (if my local painter has them). Now Im torn between black with white fonts, or just keeping with the original colour

Compared to my steel Soul Genesis (4130 cro-mo if im not wrong), the Pinarello feels like im gliding over the tarmac; the Soul Genesis was like a bit bouncy with a lively ride. The Pinarello is a tad stiffer (due to the higher tire pressure im running now), but its much more responsive than my Soul.

Well, the soul looks like a very nice bike - I don't know if it is gonna be a classic or not (cool enough name, though). I can guarantee that the Pinarello already is.

The Pinarello looks great. But, I just have to ask. In the background is that pink bike a 29er with a Rohloff speedhub in the rear? I want to see a pic of that. Sorry for the non-C&V, but I ride vintage road/track and current mountain bikes (29ers of course).

Free2move - are there a lot of places to ride in Singapore? My company has an office there, and I may eventually have a chance to go there. But there's two things that are quite important to me...slightly below my family but almost right up there ...biking and golfing.

I know golfing is possible - maybe expensive but possible. But biking? Are there any open roads? Trails, etc. in Singapore?

Due to our small country with limited land space, it is often dangerous to cycle in the day as the traffic here is heavy. That is why most of the group rides here are at night. If you want to get a rough idea of the cycling scene, heres our very own cycling portal https://www.togoparts.com.
