Looking for a new lightweight handle bar stem and bars for 1972 Schwinn Varsity - maybe some straight bars cafe-style to replace the drop down bars - any suggestions? Please to the point ... I know I know I know all about the model/vintage/frame/weight etc etc .. thanks

You are going to need a Schwinn specific stem, but you may be able to find an alloy one, then I believe any gar with a 25.4mm diameter a the clamp point should be fine.
I seem to recall having an alloy Schwinn stem... Let me see if I can find it.

I like this... I am now finally unpacked enough that I can find things... at least some things. Yesterday I found a chain ring, and today I found a stem.
I found my Schwinn stem. It is an SR, in OK shape, except for a groove worn in by the stem shifter. It is a short reach... I don't have a ruler near by, but I would guess it is about 5 cm. max height above insertion line is about 4 inches. It is a traditional road type quill stem (7 shaped).
I also noticed that Harris Cyclery has a couple of riser stems available if you want to get the handlebar up a little more.
If you are interested in the stem for cost of shipping, send a PM. I can take a picture if I find the charger for my camera's battery.
