Classic & Vintange shops in Austin TX
Anyone have a great C&V friendly bike shop in Austin they like? I have been riding my old Schwin SLT for about 4 months now and I am ready for some upgrades. The first couple of shops I tried are only interested in selling me the very least expensive crap they have and really don't know or understand my desire to upgrade with nice equipment. My bike is older than most of the shop guy's and they have not been very knowledgeable about my old machine.

I would think Freewheeling is C&V friendly. They've been around forever and some of their mechanics are "vintage." I like the place frankly. If it was closer to my house I'd be there more often, but I live south.
I've also heard good things about the shop to the east of there on 24th that used to be Discovery Cycles.
Can't recall the name right now but the owner talked me out of buying brifters for my 1984 Centurion once. That says a bit, I think.

Yellowbike!!! They won't try to sell you anything. They'll just give it to you in exchange for some volunteering (and teach you how to install and maintain it yourself).

I would also recommend The Peddler on North Loop: https://www.peddlerbike.com/
It's a small shop but I've never gotten anything but great friendly service and advice from AJ.
Edit:
p.s. yes, I'm a shill, but he gave me free dust caps once...I owe him. (But I'd stil go to yellowbike first).

I guess we've been getting the reputation around town as a single speeder or fixie riders shop. And to tell the truth, we're pretty ok with that. But the complete picture of us is much deeper. Everyone involved in the shop ELL OH VEE EEE LOVES! BIKES! If it has to do with them, then we have to do with it. It is difficult to have a bike shop that doesn't cater to a specific market these days. But we plan to keep doing what we've always done-provide services and merchandise for as many types of cyclists as we can fit into a ridiculously small bike shop-that happens to be a pretty cool and dang near magical place. We'll also continue to work on all makes and models of bicycle-department store bikes are ok to bring in. Thanks to all of you who have been our customers so far and cheers to everyone else who comes by to see what we're up to on North Loop.

I agree that Freewheeling is the place to go if you don't want to do it yourself or you need parts. I couldn't have refurbished my Hetchins without their advise and old parts cache.
