Founder of Trek Bicycles, Richard Burke, dies at 73

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The founder of the world's top bicycle-maker, Trek Bicycles, has died.

The company says Richard "D*ck" Burke died Monday night at the age of 73.

Company spokesman Eric Bjorling says Burke died at a Milwaukee hospital from complications from heart surgery.

Burke founded the company in 1976. It's headquartered in Waterloo, Wisconsin, about 30 miles east of Madison.

Burke's son John is the current president.

Trek is known among cyclists for making the bikes that Lance Armstrong rode in his Tour de France victories.

The company is known for brands including Trek, Gary Fisher, Klein and Greg LeMond.
