Crome or nickel plating peel off freewheel cogs.

Hey all;

I've got an 80's SR SemiPro with a Shimano 6 speed freewheel. I've rebuilt the wheels and I'm ready to put the freewheel on. Only I notice that the chrome or nickel plating is peeling off of the smallest cog. I bought a replacement off Ebay, but it's a recently manufactured 6 speed freewheel that is really cheap compared to the old Shimano. The pawls sound like they're grinding coffee, while the old Shimano still spins like butter.

So any harm in running the older cogs aside from perhaps increased chain wear?

the only thing that would increase is the wear to the actual cogs if the plating is pealing off, but I suspect the metal is thicker and will last longer than on the new cheaper replacement anyway. Stick with the oldie, it sounds like a goodie.. I have experienced this with some suntour freewheels also.

I have peeled a good bit of plating off newer Regina's as well. Don't know why they put it on there if it is going to peel off like that. Only thing I can think of bad is if flakes of it get into the derailler mechanism or the chain links....
