My best attempt at listing on ebay - Trek 770

Check out my description and photos on an ebay item. I went all out on photo quality and research in order to present this bike frame and fork. I'm not fishing for offers - I only want to get feedback as to how the listing itself will be received. I can't post this bike to Classic Rendezvous because it's a 1984 or one year too young to qualify for the 1983 cutoff.

The listing number is 200206706671 or you can just quickly find it if you put Trek 770 into ebay's search engine. I welcome your comments because good listings have become my obsession of late.

I think the pics look good, and by the looks of the length of the text, you were thorough in your description! My only quibble is that by showing the frame clamped like that, you offer the impression to the very skeptical that you're covering up a dent or chip, particularly in a place--the top tube--that's very vulnerable to that sort of thing. But, really, well done overall. Good luck on the auction.

Nice auction. a bit too wordy for my tastes but good.
I'm really interested in this auction since I have the same frame in
the traditional Trek Green.

How does it ride?

When I picked up this frame I was amazed at well executed it was. Since I started collecting and restoring old steel bikes, I somehow overlooked these old Treks. It seems stupid really because I've spent top dollar for Italian bikes like Gios and Colnago and the way this Trek was put together I'm convinced it is a future collectible and worthy of respect. I can't build it up right now because I've bought two bikes already this year and one is still half done (a 1975 Carabella Cinelli type track bike). Give me a little insight into how the Trek 770 performs if you will.

unfortunately my 770 is 1/2 painted and hanging on a rack.
however I did have an 85 670 (just below the 770) and it was a wonderful
rider, just a bit small for me (Trek's use of CTT vs CTC for their race bikes).
I have to agree that the early Treks rival the best of the italian bikes in
ride with little or no fanfare. Trek had some excellent builders, they knew what they
were doing and executed a no nonsense highly undervalued bike.
I'm not certain about the bikes built after total automation of the process.
you're 770 was the equal to the 170 bikes, only the 170 was 753 tubing.
the two models were built by the same team of builders, one of them is
a regular poster on CR list.
I believe you can post onto CR list about this one, the bike is definitely a KOF frame.

Sorry I can't give you much more info on the 770 at the moment. Once it's painted
and built I'll post here.

You can tell by your description of the frame that you like old bikes and have a soft spot for them.

Great description Garth. You know your early 80s high end Treks. I'd buy it if it was a 58. I have an '83 760 with 531c (original owner). Are you sure about the dropouts? I know those are the 1010Bs, but mine has them also. So I don't think it was just the 170 and 770, or was it that way from '84 forward. I don't have a pump peg on mine...damn. Perhaps you should describe what the "58" means on the BB lug...that is for the tighter 58° angle between the down and seat tube, used on some of their racing geometries. The 60TSI lugs where a little bit more stretched out.

Otherwise, nice frame.

(Too bad about the head badge though. I for one am psyched that Trek went back to their original symbol (modernized version) for '08)

I hope you really did want input. That is certainly a more informative listing than most, but I think buyers appreciate ready access to key facts in a bulleted list, rather than buried in paragraphs of prose. I know that when I look at a listing, I want to know a few key facts right away, such as:
  • The frame size and how it was measured:
  • The frame material and construction method:
  • Wheel size and rear spacing:
  • Lengths of top tube and chainstays:
  • Whether is uses nutted or recessed brakes:
  • An approximate weight:

Your prose includes a lot of information that might be of interest in a forum post, but I can't imagine a buyer wanting to know things like how the shop wanted to keep the original grouppo that you never got and aren't selling, and how many other models of other bikes came with that group. I think it's great that the prose shows a real love of the product, but you may have gotten carried away with enthusiasm. All in all, though, I'd much rather get too much info than too little.

3. That's an '85. Don't care if the frame was built in '84. Think model years, like auto mfrs do. It's painted as a model year '85. (I had an '84 760 built in '83 but with '84's lugs and paint scheme.)
