A Question about a Raleigh

Picked up an old raleigh today, has rod and drums breaks Front/back. The serial number's under the seat are 33500 and under that is D7, the bike has enclosed chain guard, and on the down tube it has Raleigh in Yellow. Under that it says, "the all steel bike" and its a sterny archer 3 speed internal hub. On the crank arms it has a guy(Sir Walter Raleigh), where most I've seen have the Herring. The badge on the front has the herring, and it says, "The Raleigh Nottingham, England". I checked the serial # out at Retro Raleigh's and from what I can see my serial number is between 1896-1897, could this be right?

I'll try and post pictures but my camera is having problems.

I don't think it is quite that old...those serial numbers are very suspect. The Sturmey Archer hub should have a date stamp somewhere on it.

A herring?!?!?!?!? I always thought that Raleighs had a heron - as in a bird, not a fish.

Keep that herring away from the gulls!

In terms of date, the rear hub will tell you a lot. If you can figure out the model, you can match it against the models timeline at the Sturmey-Archer Heritage page.

Fwiw, the models I've seen with Sir Walter stamped on the crankarms were usually made in the 1960s or 1970s.

With rod brakes and the chain casing, would that likely make it a DL1?

fwiw - the Sturmey Archer AW hub came out in 1939.

Depends how old it is. In the 1930s to 1950s, lots of "Tourist" models had rod brakes and chain cases. Here's the Dawn Safety Tourist (Mod. 19) from the 1939 catalog:

https://retroraleighs.com/catalogs/1939/pages/08.htm

The defining character of the DL-1 for me are those 28" wheels.

Do you see a date code stamped on the rear Sturmey Archer hub? And what model hub is it? The date will look like XX YY, where XX is the last two digits of the year and YY (or Y) is the month of manufacture.

Not postive but the drum brakes may have date codes too. Or is the front hub possibly a dyno hub? I have had people mistake them for a drum brake before. It is also my understanding that the drum brake and the dyno hub share a common outer hub, the only difference being the internals

Well, took me a couple days and from what I found...on the back rim it says 2/64, and the front is 4/65, so I guess nlerner was right, it is a 60's bike. I found after the clean up around the serial #...it is 33500X-D7. I think I'm gonna restore it, here's some pictures below, tell me what you think(Yes or No?)...
