Peugot Road Bike 53 Cms - $150 Worth It?

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/bik/609009240.html

Hi, this is han again.

I wanted to know if this post was worth a look. i talked to the owner and he refused to lower the price. so 150 dollars is the limit. all i got from him was it is almost all original and is MADE IN FRANCE. Is it worth the 150 smackers guys?

Based on where you are located I imagine there are a lot of people looking for old bike. In that respect it's probably worth it because it looks to be in decent shape... however most of us here, myself included wouldn't pay that, but we are bike snobs looking for top drawer quality at ridiculous price and if you have around with us long enough you will find those bikes. But you probably just want to ride this bike and are not looking at it like a collector like most of us are. So yeah it's most likely worth it. Well if it has alloy rims.

150 seems kinda high to me, and I like them. Market conditions where you are may vary though. I paid five bucks for mine (the one I kept), and the only one I've ever paid more than ten bucks for had simplex retrofriction shifters and an old French bar mount bottle cage on it (as well as a busted rear end, but that's another story).

Going over 100$ on a UO seems nuts to me, but I saw a suicide hub conversion going for 250$ on our local CL, and 150$ for a frame alone, so what do I know? Of course, I've paid less than 100$ for PXs, so I'm completely spoilt.

Keep in mind this guy lives in saskatchewan and I don't think he has ever paid more than $100 for one of his bikes..

hanhua,
I think skyrider's recommendation from your other thread holds true here:
Being this your first PROJECT bike, is it wise to go french. A good old japenese bike should come up at a decent price with alloy rims and 700c wheels.

What about this bike? A 1976 Centurion.
https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/bik/610045990.html

It won't have 700c rims but at least its all english threading which will make it easier to work on.

HAHA! yeah, i was just thinking that. i live in the LA area where all vintage bikes have either been converted to fixies or single gear speed. i have to literally look day and night to find an original anything. so what do you guys think? worth it? i just want a nice classic ride around campus and around my neighborhood in the mornings.

Sounds like RVA to me. I still wouldn't go over 100$ on a UO8, no matter the condition. I like them-- a lot-- but they have issues like French threaded and sized parts, odd front hub spacing, and so forth. All those things can be dealt with with patience and ingenuity, so they're not the obstacles some might lead you to believe, but for a first vintage ride they might be frustrating.

Budget a bit more and you can get a 531 framed Frenchie with some patience, as well.

Tubular tires are usually found on quality bikes.
You should be loking at this one.
Keep in mind that old french parts are going to be a pain to find.

I'd check that one out, I've never seen a UO/AO/UE/AE with sew-ups.

Too much, even in a hot bike market. That is conceivably what it would sell for, IF it were cleaned, tuned, and ready to ride. From what I can tell looking the pics, it's not. Plus, it is low-end, heavy, has weird French parts, and steel cottered cranks.

Shameless plug:
If you happen to be coming up SF way, I've got a couple of nice, clean 53cm bikes you could look at.

https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/bik/600542796.html

Buy the Centurion and the peugeot with sew ups, your still under $200. Now you got 2 bikes and 3 sets of wheels, Ride the Centurion, while you redo the Peugeot, now if you need extra parts buy the original peugeot., Then sell them all and get an Italian lugged bike.

This is the same bike as the first Peugeot you were looking at, the UE8, but this is the non-touring UO8 version minus the rack, fenders, dynamo, etc. This seller was nice enough to show the stand over height as 33" which is what I suspect the first one was too.

This one has been upgraded. The rear derailleur looks like it might be a Suntour and sew ups did not come on this grade of bike as others have mentioned.

The prices are close at $90 for the first and $100 for the second.

Go get the $100 Peugeot! It's not a UO-8. Look at the lugs, the forged dropouts and the top tube brake cable clips. I believe it's a PA-10, their third best at the time. I'd like to have it myself.

If you don't buy it I will. I'm sure I can get my sister to pick it up for me.

You started out looking at a 53cm. If that was correct, a bike with 33" standover is probably too big. That'd be more in the 58cm range.

It's too big for me but I still want it, if only to save it from becoming a fixie.
