To our friends in snow country
How are things in the snowy regions of out country? Have any of you been able to get out and do some riding or are you still waiting for the thaw? We are having snow warnings here in the Seattle/Tacoma area and thats just wrong. Just hoping you all aren't going stir crazy I know its been a rough winter.

Our snow melted off by the mid morning, but it's still a bit odd to have snow this late...

Fortunately the Colorado front range is not truely "snow country" although March and April are our snowiest months. I've commuted through the winter except for a few particularly nasty days and gotten several nice rides in over the last month or so but not as much as I'd like. It's cold again now and we'll probably see the same snow you're expecting but it should melt of right away. The bad thing about Colorado is that when they say the high will be 62, that means it will be 62 at 4 in the afternoon. If you go out for a ride at lunchtime as I try to do as often as possible it might only be 50. It's not going to be really warm like I like it until May at least.

SB,
!
Does this explain my feelings? Another 6-8 inches expected to fall today.
I lost track of our total inches this winter. Concord, NH, our capital, has officially measured 112 inches before today's storm. Less than 1 inch raises us into 3rd, and 3 inches places us in second, behind 122 inches in 1873-74. We are about 1000 feet in elevation above Concord, and usually receive 50-100% MORE snow. So, you can see why we are sick of the white stuff!
My guess is the last pile won't melt in my yard until well after May 1.

Looks like how it looks in ricohman's picture up there over here still. I rode outside for an hour on Saturday before I began to get too cold. Got maybe 2 hours on Wednesday which was nice, but still nasty outside, and have to ride a crappy bike due to the wetness and all the sand. Probably gonna get to ride this weekend, and tempatures should be a slightly above freezing for a good week.. 1-5 degrees. Some of that snow should melt.

The good Pastor has us beat, but here in Madison WI we are over 100" for the season. The previous record from 1978-'79 was 76" so we beat it by a bunch! It's melting fast now but the parking lots have huge mountains of snow in them. They ran out of salt for the roads so they started using sand. All the roads are now covered in sand which would make bike riding more dangerous than it already is. High temps are still in the low forties here also, so I think I will wait a while yet. I have seen a few folks out though.

We've had over 4m this winter in the Ottawa to Montreal corridor for the winter months - that's a little over 13 feet in total or about 157 inches - and it's melting very slowly. (The record is 4.4m) Of course this doesn't mean we're sitting under 13 feet of snow - it melts a bit here and there (we had a big melting in January) but it all adds up to there being snow here about a month later than in the past 4 or 5 years.
To make matters worse we've been below average temps by about 8 to 10 degrees F for the last 3 weeks. We should be hitting daytime highs in the 40F region but we've barely been breaking 32F, and it's still below freezing overnight. The result is 4 to 6 foot snowbanks along most city streets and lots of wet (and salty) runoff on the roads during the day, which means ice if you drive into a shady region, and at night.
I did see two riders yesterday - one on a pretty serious road bike. Makes me want a carbon or Ti framed bike just to be able to ride and not worry about corrosion. However I see the real problem as visibility - with high snowbanks sightlines along curved roads or at intersections is limited or non-existant, and there are no shoulders to speak of.
Stir crazy - getting there.
(stringbreaker - thanks for asking!)

If I was back home in Pennsylvania, I'm sure I'd be out riding. But, I am out in Butte, Montana right now and its weather is insane. 11 degrees this morning and snowing a bit.
Last weekend I wanted to take a ride from a town called Anaconda to the old mining town of Phillipsburg. It is a 30 ride that goes up and over a mountain pass. When I left Anaconda, it was sunny and windy, a really nice day for MT in March. When I neared the top of the pass which is about 11 miles up the road, it was a total white out. It was snowing so hard I couldn't see 10 feet in front of me.
I pulled over and stopped at the Georgetown Lake boat launch, waited a bit and turned around. I was really disappointed. I was looking forward to crossing the mountain top and the wicked descent down the other side.

It sucks, I say. SUCKS!! Got about 3-4" last night. But it's supposed to be 39F (average this time of year is around 50F*) tommorow and, mirabile dictu, sunny! So if the snow has melted I'll take the 820 w/fenders and put on toe covers for a lap or two around Stoney Creek metropark. For only the 2nd time this year.
Off now for yet another stage of the Tour de Cellar...

*Fahrenheit and English measurements suck too. But that's another thread, if not another forum entirely.

How many tons of snow have you moved from your driveway in the last few months? Or should we not ask?
By the way, there are tiny flakes of snow drifting down here in Kent right now--which will not amount to anything, but it's still snow .

Beautiful country you live in there Pastor.
Our snow is all black and ugly looking now. Typical for March around here.
Now we need the rains to come and wash everything clean again.

I believe there was a regulation passed that condemns NYC to not getting any snow anymore. This new statute was violated once or twice this winter, but it was pretty pathetic. Even in North Salem (my parents' new hometown) there hasn't been much, save one good storm in Feb.
Now, if I was back out at school in Rochester...

PastorBob,
I know this sounds crass coming from my warm (relatively) southern clime but
that picture looks wonderful, I'd actually give my eyeteeth to see some real snow again
( grew up in Poughkeepsie, not quite as much as you but I do remember 3 feet of snow on ground).

We are anxiously awaiting Spring to arrive in northern Minnesota. Winter likes it here this year and does not want to leave! Our daily high temps are in the mid-30's and the snow is gone from the streets in town, so i have snuck out for a couple rides of a few miles each on my way to the post office. To keep from going crazy, i took down, and brought in my Raleigh Comp USA about a week ago and cleaned it up. Last night i brought in my Fuji Crosstown (daily rider) and did the same to it. The forecast says maybe low 40's in another 3 - 4 days, so we are keeping our fingers crossed. Thank God for this forum to help pass the time!
