The Ultegra brake and Tektro levers really finish that one off.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
It's been a while since I visited this thread and I did promise an update after I re-wrapped those bars on the Pug (I went with cloth and shellac)... it should make you all feel better about what happened to that Cannondale.

Your bar angle is a travesty.

And yet... it works really well for touring and commuting.
All my long distance bikes have their bars rolled up a little which makes riding on the hoods very comfy and puts my hands and wrists in a very comfortable position in the drops.

What do most of you do with your vintage bikes? Ride them or resell them?

I have one I bought for the steel fork and threw the frame out behind my shed. After seeing the zebra bike I dug it out. I'm going to pc it white and build a FG out of it to flip.
The cable guides just pop off and the shifter bosses unscrew. I'm going to weld up the rear drop-outs and cut rear facing horizontal ones. No zebra stripes though for me.

I like the look of the stripes. A bit like thylacine stripes (Tasmanian tiger) but whatever it's cool! A bike is a bike is a bike - sirpoopalot, only you know how it rides.

I expect, at some point, to see an '82 Huffy converted to fixed gear, and a bunch of guys on this thread talking about how the bike has been "ruined".

I honestly don't get the fascination with giving FGs godawful mono-color spray-jobs. Is it illegal to take your derailleur off without first butchering the hell out of the paint?
Seriously. This trend needs to die.

Ah who cares? It's their bike and they can do what they like with it. As stated several times on the first couple pages, the bike loses all of its value, but the thing is that it's the kid's decision if he wants to personalize it at the cost of losing value. AT LEAST the bike is being ridden and not shoved somewhere in pristine condition in some old man's garage only to be discovered and parted out on ebay by his son. Maybe completely repainting a bike is some kind of a disrespect to the makers of the bike or something, but I think the makers would much more enjoy knowing their bikes are still out there on the road with today's bikes... and to some extent a repaint almost assures this since that pretty much rids it of any value from brand prestige.
Not that I'd repaint my bike as I sorta like the history there, but just saying. It's not the end of the world that some people like to make something new out their old bikes.

Even the SS/FG forum frowns on doing anything irreparable to nice old frames. I'm all for people showing off their individuality through their bikes, or their cars, or their clothes, or their music.
Time to lighten up and realize the world is a whole lot bigger than the C & V forum. I know, it can be a scary thing, somebody not painstakingly restoring a Varsity to showroom quality but there are far more important things in life; like beer. And right now, "I'm completely surrounded by NO BEER!" - Onslow

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
The SS/FG guys are maturing methinks and developing an appreciation for vintage frames and the fact that they can be pretty unique and rather beautiful in their unaltered / unhacked form.

Mind you...one of my daily drivers is a '62 Peugeot (fixed gear conversion) which has logged more miles than any bike I currently have.
But compared to some that Peugeot is pretty new.

Fixie
I'm gonna get flamed (sort of the same way a guy does at a 50s party admitting his favorite band is AC/DC)but....I think the 'after' fixie (gold to black with white) is pretty sharp (yeah,I'm 65 and should know better)
I've got TT bars on the 83 Paragon..
(and I've replaced old school campy with suntour sence my days racing)

This thread has gotten kinda freakish when people started posting modern bikes with track dropouts. I used to ride a fixie conversion back in '80 or so, it just worked for me, and I lived in the mountains. I made the frame, didn't modify it. I hope someone is still enjoying that bike, sold it when I got my degree, didn't have the room.
But some of the bikes that are revered in this forum just floor me, they are only rare because their brothers ended up in a steel recycling center where they belonged.
